Recipe for homemade steak sauce with only food ingredients that can be quickly mixed together in a couple of minutes so that you can avoid using commercial brands with many additives and MSG.

A homemade steak sauce is crucial for the home cook.

For starters, store-bought versions are loaded with MSG and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

Even if a sauce label lists sugar and not corn syrup, the sweetener is beet sugar if not specifically labeled “cane sugar”.

Beet sugar is GMO just like HFCS nearly 100% of the time unless labeled organic.

Why do you need sugar in a steak sauce anyway?

A healthy steak sauce made at home would contain no such thing.

Another big problem is the oils.

Commercial steak sauces typically contain unhealthy rancid oils like canola or soybean, which are almost assuredly of GMO origin if you purchase in North America.

What about that little tray of various sauces that they bring you when you order steak at a restaurant?

Steer clear unless having a really bad headache or migraine within the next day or two is your goal!

Like to grill at home like we do? The yummy steak sauce below goes very well with this grassfed filet mignon recipe as well as more typical cuts.

Worried that barbecue is unhealthy? Be sure to follow these tips on how to grill safely.

This delicious recipe below was shared at the 2010 Wise Traditions Conference by Sally Fallon Morell.

I’ve used it for years and it is a keeper!

Homemade Steak Sauce Recipe

Homemade steak sauce recipe made with whole ingredients and healthy fats so that you don’t end up with a nasty headache and bloating later like what happens with commercial brands!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Servings 1 cup
Author Sarah Pope

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup ketchup preferably organic
  • 1 Tbl grainy mustard
  • 1 Tbl lemon juice
  • 3 Tbl butter preferably grassfed
  • 2 Tbl dry sherry
  • 1 tsp fish sauce
  • 1 dash tabasco sauce
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients in a small glass mason jar set in a small pan of simmering water.

  2. Stir a few times until the butter or ghee is melted and the sauce is warm.

  3. Serve and enjoy!

  4. Store leftover homemade steak sauce in the refrigerator. Storing in glass will retain the flavor and freshness better.

  5. This steak sauce typically keeps for about a month.

Recipe Notes

Store bought or homemade ghee may be used in place of butter for those that are sensitive to milk proteins.

    Hi Sarah,
I have been subscribing to your emails for awhile now. We have limited resources but are taking teeny tiny baby steps regarding a traditional foods lifestyle. As I am considering buying lard at the store, I investigated the products available. The ones I have found have some additives. Are these safe?
    Thanks, Karen

Hi Karen, it is best to buy lard from a small farm. I would not buy from the store. I would suggest ordering the Shopping Guide for $1 from the WAPF (westonaprice.org/shoppingguide)

This has places you can mail order good quality lard for a good price from small farms if you don’t have any in your area.

Is there anything you could substitute for the sherry?

You can get it at an Asian supermarket. It is fermented anchovies, salt, and water.

Hi, Sarah, the recipe looks great, do you use it for anything else?
One thing, I went over to your Basic Dressings and Sauces video but the link to the WestonAPrice source was broken. Do you have another way for me to get to the written recipes? Thx!

I always loved steak sauce, but then I changed my way of eating and had to cut it out of my diet. I don’t even miss steak sauce now.

We stopped buying them ages ago too, but because of HFCS. My hubby’s been making ours ever since and they are so so much yummier!
