Fruit smoothies are incredibly delicious. However, they have one huge problem: they are almost all simple carbs containing fresh fruit and usually at least some fruit juices.

This is a recipe for shooting the blood sugar to the moon if you consume them alone or on an empty stomach. It is NOT a good post-workout idea or meal replacement!

My daughter loves fruit smoothies, but I always make sure she has one with a meal that contains plenty of protein and healthy fats to eliminate the insulin spike.

If you really want your fruit smoothie as a meal replacement, then be sure to include a healthy fat source in the recipe such as kefir. plain yogurt or coconut milk to prevent a blood sugar crash later!
