Cod Liver Oil 101 (+ Video on How to Take It!)

by Sarah Pope / Affiliate Links ✔

cod liver oil off the spoon

The importance of taking cod liver oil for your best health cannot be underestimated. In Dr. Weston A. Price’s book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, a study of school girls in New Zealand found a daily supplement of high vitamin cod liver oil each day reduced cavities by nearly 42%.

In the following video, I will show you the best brand on the market today for cod liver oil as well as how much to take based on the research of Dr. Weston A. Price and the Weston A. Price Foundation.

The proper dosage of cod liver oil is 1 tsp (5 ml) per day and depending on the size of the spoons in your kitchen, you may or may not be taking the right dose.

The size of spoons varies quite a bit around the world, so be sure to measure the spoon you are using to take your cod liver oil as sometimes what people think is a full teaspoon is actually only a half!

Remember to always take your cod liver oil with high vitamin butter oil. If this supplement is not available where you live, you may substitute (homemade) grassfed ghee instead. For those with dairy allergies, use emu oil.

Another dairy-free option is a natural K2 supplement derived from natto.

Taking these healthy fats together synergistically boosts the absorption of nutrients as noted in the detailed research of Dr. Weston Price.

Cod Liver Oil Basics

The video below shows you the basics of taking cod liver oil. If you are interested in cod liver oil for babies, the linked article provides more information.

If gagging is an issue with strong tasting foods like cod liver oil, this article plus video on how to stop the gag reflex for about 20-30 seconds with a simple acupressure technique may prove helpful.

Wondering what brands are best? I personally take this brand of virgin cod liver oil, which is sourced from some of the cleanest waters on earth. Note that my currently preferred brand differs from the recommendation in the video, which was filmed some years ago. The suggested manner of taking it and the reasons why remain the same, however.

Note that cod liver oil is a better choice than both krill oil and plain fish oil. This is because CLO contains natural fat-soluble vitamins as well as important omega-3 fatty acids.

I don’t know of a single person with health problems from FCLO in my very large Tampa Chapter of the WAPF and I have been Chapter Leader here since 2002. My family and I have used FCLO since 2007 and have experienced nothing but health benefits. This is clearly a blown out of proportion situation to drive new members to a new organization created by disgruntled exWAPFers and to increase demand for the Rosita product (I wouldn’t take it if I were you as Norway pulled one of Rosita’s products off the shelves due to dioxin contamination which gives serious pause about quality control at that company: .

Interesting how the anti-FCLO people haven’t mentioned that story at all. Hmmmm. A bit “fishy” don’t you think? You can’t build an organization as large as the WAPF (16,000+ members) without having at least a few disgruntled members.

I’d be curious to know the answer to Patti’s question, too, as I take the FCLO/High vitamin butter oil blend.

    Hi, Sarah:

I was doing some reading about Dr. Price (WAPF) recommending that the High Vitamin Butter Oil be taken along with the FCLO. Do you practice taking both of these products together?

I was thinking about getting the combined High Vitamin Butter Oil/FCLO product that Green Pastures makes. Would taking 2 teaspoons of that product each day give me the required nutritional boost that 1 and 1/3 teaspoons of their FCLO would?

Do you recommend one product over the other?

Thank you so much for your awesome blog and advice!

    Very best regards & blessings!

    Patti 🙂

Hi Sarah, I know it’s been a while since this post, but in this vid you say that 1/2 tsp is about 1500 IU of Vitamin D and that 1 tsp is about 3000….so to get 4000 IUs we need about 1 tsp and a third. I just looked up the info on Weston A. Price site (at http://www.westonaprice.org/cod-liver-oil/cod-liver-oil-basics) and got this:

Based on these values, the dosage for the high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil is provided as follows:

Children age 3 months to 12 years: 1/2 teaspoon or 2.5 mL, providing 4650 IU vitamin A and 975 IU vitamin D.
Children over 12 years and adults: 1 teaspoon or 10 capsules, providing 9500 IU vitamin A and 1950 IU vitamin D.
Pregnant and nursing women: 2 teaspoons or 20 capsules, providing 19,000 IU vitamin A and 3900 IU vitamin D.

Is this the correct info now or what you say in this video? Please advise, and thanks!

I have a 6 yro who has 7 cavities, and one of which has just shown up in a permanent molar (which hasn’t even fully erupted, so we are having to wait to seal them ) So I saw this after seeing about CLO on pinterest. A friend has some that her kids won’t take, and I thought I could possibly fill my own veg caplets and entice my daughter to swallow them, but I don’t know how much. I imagine I can fill a syringe with 5 ml, and then fill how ever many caplets. There was a comment above that went unanswered about thyroid issues, because I thought about taking it as well, but I have hypo thyroid that is under control, and I don’t want to screw with it. I just want to get her cavities under control, since nothing else seems to be working

I would be curious for a reply to this question posted a while back because I was wondering the same thing:

Alicia: I am concerned because am pregnant and read to take 2 tsp of fermented cod liver oil daily however, can’t find any info on how much to take of the Green pastures Royal hvbo/fclo blend when pregnant. Would it be the same?

Also – is it better to take the blend of the Cod Liver and the Butter oil or is it totaly ok to just take the Cod Liver Oil without butter oil? I am just figuring out to buy for my husband and I and trying to see which is the most cost effective but still beneficial to our health. I can’t seem to find direct information!!
