Try this easy method for the prevention of sinus problems and infection using therapeutic probiotics before bed to maintain tissue health and flora balance in the nasal cavities.woman trying to prevent sinus congestion blowing her nose

When on vacation or traveling for work, many of us eat lower quality food and stay up later than we normally would at home. When your eating/sleeping schedule gets mangled due to travel plans, sinus problems can quickly crop up. The symptoms cause discomfort and misery especially if flying is part of the itinerary.

The next time you are planning to go out of town, try this easy way to prevent sinus problems to keep you breathing freely.

Doctor’s Tip on Preventing Sinus Problems

Most folks don’t realize that beneficial flora strains, also known as good bacteria, seek to dominate and protect every tissue of your body, not just your gut! There are plenty of beneficial bacteria in your mouth, throat, nasal passages, and ears too.

When you get a sinus infection, the balance of good bacteria to bad (pathogenic) bacteria – including candida – becomes imbalanced. This means that the pathogenic strains take over with lots of mucus and possibly even an infection the result.

To prevent this from happening, after brushing and flossing your teeth at night before you go to bed, empty a probiotic capsule into your mouth, swish it around in your mouth, and swallow.

It is very important to not drink anything – even water – after you do this.

Enough probiotic residue will be left in your mouth after swallowing. The good little critters will migrate while you sleep all through your nasal passages, guarding the roost and helping to make sure no pathogens have an opportunity to start plugging up the works.

This important tip is suggested by an MD based on the clinical experience of Dr. Natasha Campbell-Mcbride. She suggests it in her groundbreaking GAPS book. (1)

Therapeutic Grade Probiotics for Clear Sinuses

Be aware that not all probiotics are of the same quality and hence will not have equal effectiveness in preventing sinus problems. If a probiotic needs refrigeration, for example, don’t buy it. Probiotic cultures should be hardy enough to be shelf-stable with no refrigeration necessary.  Think about it. If a probiotic can’t survive at room temperature, how in the world will it survive the digestive process to make it into the large intestine intact to help rebalance bacterial populations?

When choosing a probiotic, consider that a wide variety of strains should be present.

These brands of therapeutic strength probiotics are tested for quality. I have also personally vetted them.

Already Have an Infection?

If you already have a sinus infection and need help, consider this idea.

Use a ceramic neti pot (I like this one) plus your probiotic of choice to help heal a sinus infection fast with no antibiotics. It is important to always use filtered water in a neti-pot, by the way.

The key is harnessing beneficial microbes to beat back the pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi like C. Albicans) and re-establish balance in the sinus tissue as quickly as possible. Note that some strains of probiotics thrive better in the ear, nose, and throat tissues than others. As a result, it is best to use oral probiotics for this purpose, although any probiotic will certainly be helpful for healing.

What about Hydrogen peroxide? I use an atomizer to kill the bacteria.
What about using both hydrogen peroxide and probiotics?

Using hydrogen peroxide would be counterproductive as it would kill the probiotics too.

Could one rotate hydrogen peroxide flush in the morning and probiotic in evening? I have an infection that won’t go away. My dr is wanting me to take cipro to treat and I’ve read terrible side effects. I’d like to treat infection on my own without using cipro if possible.

Using hydrogen peroxide kills off all the bacteria in the nasal passages…both good and bad. So, it defeats the purpose of the probiotics.

I liked your comment about opening a probiotic capsule and swishing it dry in the mouth. Great way to get beneficial bacteria throughout the respiratory system.
There is one high quality probiotic that works excellently to treat sinusitis, especially chronic sinusitis – it’s Lacto Sinus, which contains Lactobacillus sakei. And it is meant to be swished in the mouth.
    Worked great for me.

It sure was nice when you talked about the good bacteria and how they also protect the throat, mouth, and nasal passage aside from protecting the guts. At least, now I know the probable reason why I am suffering from nasal problems. I once took medication that killed good bacteria in my body. Anyway, for now, I will see a doctor to fix this. Then I will strengthen my good bacteria again.

    Hello,
My husband has has numerous sinus surgeries too many to remember, he has had reconstructive sinus surgeries and several sinus infections, and a little over a month ago, I took him to see our family doctor and she gave him some antibiotics to help with his bronchitis and a few weeks went by and still not any better, so I took him to see his Ent and he said he has a sinus infection so gave him some strong antibiotics and some strong cough suppressant, and that was over a week and a half ago, and he is better, but he still is coughing and he can’t talk with out coughing, and he needs to voice in order to talk on conference calls. He has done the sinus rinses and also he puts Vaseline in his nose for moisture, he has had so many nose bleeds too many to count. He has sinusitis. A deviated septium.
I give him a probiotic, but I don’t think it is the right one for him, I give him the trubioictics. I was reading on people who have these issues with their sinuses and I have read that there is one probiotics that works, that has sakei in it, but he will not go against what his Ent doctor says. So another question is, I have heard that Culturelle is good for people who have sinuses issues, but which ones? He will not put probiotic solution in his sinuses, so I am hoping that he will take something to take like a probiotics for his specific needs, I take vsl3 for my ulcerative and it has helped me. A wife is desperate for her husband. He has suffered way too long. Plus to boot, he is blind.
