How to Best Swallow Cod Liver Oil (VIDEO)

swallow cod liver oil

In this nuts and bolts video, I show you exactly how I swallow cod liver oil and high vitamin butter oil every day!  My kids take it the very same way.

That’s right.  I’m slugging it down for the whole wide world to see.

You now have no excuse.  This is how to get those critical nutrients A, D, and K2 every single day – quickly and painlessly.   You won’t get enough any other way more unless you eat pretty close to perfect and eat liver 2-3 times a week (who does?) so get a grip and start taking it already!  Ok?

If you have a child too young to take cod liver oil by spoon, you can always try the bottoms-up approach. This works very well for diapered children.

Price DDS.

How to Swallow Cod Liver Oil without Gagging

In the video below, I demonstrate exactly how to get cod liver oil down without gagging. This is the easy process I’ve used for years in our home and it works great for toddlers and adults alike.

Ideally, cod liver oil should be taken with butter oil for maximum benefit. You can get butter oil and cod liver oil from the best manufacturers here.

Once you have established this healthful daily habit, you will be shocked to notice colds and flus slowly disappear from your household. In fact, my oldest is almost 18 years old and no antibiotics have been used during his entire childhood or that of his two younger siblings. Yes, it is possible to raise children with zero antibiotics.  I’ve done it three times and learning to swallow cod liver oil so it isn’t a big drama every single day is a big reason why.

I can’t see the video as my filter is blocking it, so don’t know exactly how you do it. I take mine every day with the last swallow of coffee with raw pastured cream in it. I allow myself a cup per day of low caffeine coffee mixed with a hefty amount of cream. The coffee helps mask the flavor (which after 5 yrs is not nearly as bad as it seemed in the beginning), and the fat of the cream helps to pull any lingering FCLO/BO off my tongue. My husband just takes it plain…doesn’t seem to bother him at all. My kids take it and then drink a glass of milk. They don’t care for it, but are good about taking it because they’ve seen that they don’t get sick like they used to, and really believe in it. I instituted a random check this year because one child was forgetting. Every couple of weeks I randomly ask who took it (always in the afternoon as they’re supposed to take it after breakfast). Whoever has done it gets some kind of reward…usually a dollar is all, but I’ve been known to do more just as a nice incentive…and I give no mercy to go take it right then. If they’ve taken it they get a reward, if not, well maybe next time. (They still will go take it.) Also no lecture or punishment if they haven’t. After a winter of not being sick last year they connected the dots and are pretty good about it…even reminding each other. They were 6 and 9 when we started taking it and have taken it for 4-5 years.

I can get my oldest son to take it by putting a little orange juice in a cup. I then add the Cod liver oil and butter oil on top. The juice seems to take the taste away and it just slides down. I take it the same way. I don’t like to give my kids too much fruit juice, but I don’t use alot and it works. 🙂

This is how I take it as well. I have a mini measure shot glass that has lines for tsp measurements on the side. I do 3 tsp kombucha on the bottom, then add 1 tsp CLO and 1/2 tsp butter oil and if you swallow it fast all you taste is the kombucha. If you do get the CLO taste, following it with something strong like kefir or sauerkraut works to take the taste away.

      Melanie,
I’m with you. I use a mini shot glass with the measurements. I put the Premier high vitamin CLO in first. Followed by 1/2 tsp. of ghee that I make from raw butter or raw cultured butter from grass fed cows. Then I just squeeze fresh lemon juice from a 1/4 of a lemon. Stir it up and it goes right down with minimal taste of the CLO

Yeah, that’s the only way I can get liquid CLO down. I juice an orange or grapefruit, put a small amount in a shot glass and the rest in a juice glass. I float the CLO and melted butter oil in the shot glass, hold my breath, swallow it fast, and then grab the juice glass, swish the rest of the juice in my mouth and swallow before I breathe again. I think the strong taste of the juice masks the taste of the oil better than anything, and by following the shot with a chaser, you give the acidic juice a chance to dissolve any remaining oil traces in your mouth.

I really, really, really, really hate cod liver oil. I used to weep to take it until resolved the burping (see my other comment) and then came up with this juice solution. It is the foulest taste I’ve ever had and it’s hard to believe something so awful is a miracle elixir. There’s no way just water would work for me.

    Hi,
Does anyone know what the difference in the regular fermented CLO and the EMULSIFIED cod liver oil from Green pastures is?? Thanks!

The emulsified is thicker, that’s all. Some prefer that texture.

      Jan 10, 2012 at 1:30 pm

You REALLY have to stir and shake the emulsified kind. Otherwise, you’ll have all oil on top and all of the thick part on the bottom. The thick stuff tastes better though so I really try to mix it up.

My problem isn’t so much getting it down. For me, it’s the burping it for the rest of the day that seems to be the problem with CLO or any other fish oil, whether liquid or capsule. And I do mean All. Day. Long. So, I never get away from that flavor. I finished a bottle of FCLO about two months ago and decided I’ve had enough for a while and am now taking salmon oil with EFA’s and D3. So far, only a few *tasty* burps and that’s usually within the first hour of taking the softgel, and then no more.

This may not be ideal, but it will have to do for me at least for a while. I don’t even like fish in the first place, so when people say to me “well, the FCLO is so much better”. Well, it might be, but if I can’t stand to take it then what good is it to me? This isn’t the first time I’ve taken a complete break from the FCLO.

Yeah, I used to have that problem some years ago, of burping it all day long. Would you believe, a naturopath tested me on a variety of things and said I was intolerant of naturally occurring vitamin a and d? I thought that was crazy, but I did her “allergy clearing” and never had a problem with burping it again. She did “Total Body Modification”–it was like a series of taps up and down my spine with an instrument kind of a like a chiropractor’s “activator.” One brief treatment of that was all it took for me. Very weird.

My son will take the Cinnamon Tingle FCLO and actually says he likes it – tastes like Hot Tamales. But I have to smear the butter oil on his behind.

I also cannot get the video to play, but I read the “bottoms up approach” for children and am thinking that might be the route I’d prefer to take for ME, too! I absolutely hate seafood and the smell and taste of seafood has me balking… I haven’t bought the FCLO yet, but I want to, I really do… I was thinkign that maybe rubbing it into feet before socks would work…

Thanks for the video! I have a question: Is there a difference or preference over the cod liver oil you were taking in the video and the one you had recently promoted on Radiant Life called Premier Quantam High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil? Is it better to take the liquid form or are capsules okay?

Also, what is the brand name of the butter oil you took in the video?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The Premier Quantum cod liver oil is very good quality and the same brand I took for years before going with Green Pastures. Green Pastures is more expensive and because it is fermented, some have trouble with the lactic acid in it so the Premier is a good alternative in those cases.

That’s a helpful video and a good reminder that taking this is worth it–if it were medicine you were required to take, you’d find a way. I like to have something immediately after taking CLO, sometimes a grapefruit sectioned to eat a couple pieces, or have it just before a smoothie, or anything(!) that gives my taste buds something else to ‘think’ about 🙂 I put the CLO as far back in my mouth as possible as well. One thing I’ve read is you should take this in the morning because vitamin D is the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’ and will keep you awake if taken at night. Don’t know if this is bunk or not, but I take mine in the morning.

Hey Sarah, does the butter oil NEED to be refrigerated? I like to take my FCLO w/ the medicine syringe and that only works w/ liquid. I’m *gasp* not fond of the taste of butter and wondered if it can be left out so it won’t solidify as much. (Ordering some soon.)

I refrigerate but I don’t think you need to if you use it up quickly. Once you break the seal and leave in the pantry, it WILL go off after a few months if you don’t use it up (at least in Florida!).

So the butter oil I ordered last year … probably no longer good? (Silly me, I left it on the counter this whole time but started gagging when I took it!) BAH!
