Let’s Meet at Food Freedom Fest!Updated: January 25, 2018 Giveaways
Back in 2006, I experienced for the very first time the heavy handedness of government bureaucracy when it comes to sustainable family farms.
My local dairy farmer was under harassment for advertising his products online which had come under the radar of state agents within days of the farm being the subject of a story in the local newspaper. Showing up in typical early morning, unannounced fashion, the agents taped my farmer’s refrigerators and freezers shut, and he was forbidden to sell anything produced on his farm to pay his bills and support his family. This despite the fact that no one had gotten ill from these products nor had anyone even complained!
Fortunately, the loyal support of family, friends, and customers kept the farm afloat until the court hearing. I testified on my farmer’s behalf that day as did many others who spoke out for food freedom and the basic right of a farmer to deal directly with customers when selling goods. This story ends on a positive note .. this farm is still in business today and further harassment has not occurred.
Support of The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund is Critical to Preserving Food Freedom
That sobering experience in 2006 drove home to me the critical need for a defense fund for the family farms across America that produce nutrient dense foods.
Fortunately, the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund was born the following year on July 4, 2007 and has been successfully defending the rights of small farms ever since.
Defense of small family farms and businesses when they end up in the crosshairs of an overzealous government that seems to operate with a “shut ’em down and ask questions later” approach requires the continuous support of a solid membership and the success of fundraisers throughout the year.
One of the most important fundraisers for the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund each year takes place at Ground Zero of the sustainable farm movement in the United States: Polyface Farm in the Shenandoah Valley of beautiful western Virginia, home to best selling author/farmer Joel Salatin who is featured in the award winning documentary Food Inc. and in food writer/guru Michael’s Pollan’s book Omnivore’s Dilemma.
This year, the fundraiser is officially known as Food Freedom Fest and it will take place September 5-6, 2014. I am going to be there in person to show my support along with my dear blogging friend, Jenny McGruther of Nourished Kitchen, and I want you to join us!
