Review of the top three brands of affordable organic mattresses and how they compare in lumbar support, overall comfort, prevention of sagging, and mattress durability. my green mattress compared to avocado and happsy beds

I’ve been looking into the various brands of organic mattresses recently due to a literal avalanche of requests from readers interested in buying a safe, nontoxic, and sustainably produced mattress that is also affordably priced for tight budgets.

In this Age of COVID, sleeping on a safe mattress is more important than ever to eliminate the off-gassing risks that conventional mattresses pose night after night to respiratory health.

Top Three Affordable Organic Mattress Brands

After some thorough vetting, I narrowed the organic mattress brands worthy of consideration down to three:

  • My Green Mattress
  • Avocado
  • Happsy

At first glance, all three of these mattresses seem virtually the same.

These organic mattress brands are all manufactured with high-quality organic spring latex designs in GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified factories. They are also all priced similarly and affordably in the $1000 range.

That’s where the similarities end, however.

When you look at the details of the manufacturing process and sleep technology incorporated, My Green Mattress clearly comes out on top as the best and most affordable organic mattress on the market.

Let me go into detail about the differences and how I came to this conclusion.

My Green Mattress vs Avocado

There are four differences between My Green Mattress and the Avocado that are critically important when you dig into the details.

Coil Positioning

First of all, My Green Mattress, in particular, the Natural Escape model, has a far more comprehensive lumbar support structure than Avocado.

The My Green Mattress lumbar support coils are larger, cover 1/3 of the mattress, and are nested. This compares with the unnested pin coils of the Avocado that cover about 10% of the mattress.

You can see these three key differences in the image below. These subtle details result in extra support for the lower back area and account for a wider variety of body types.

Organic Latex

My Green Mattress uses 50% more organic latex than Avocado. This helps reduce partner disturbance issues and provides additional comfort to the hips and shoulders.

More Wool in Quilted Cover

Similar to the organic latex, there is also 50% more wool in the quilted cover of My Green Mattress versus Avocado.

This additional material not only improves comfort through additional cushioning but also increases the wicking and cooling capacity of the mattress.

Additional Stitching

While both Avocado and My Green Mattress use hand tufting to eliminate the need for toxic adhesives, My Green Mattress employs additional buttons and stitching on the cover. While seemingly a small detail, it is, in fact, a crucial difference that prevents sagging and enhances mattress longevity.

Thus, if you are considering either of these mattresses, My Green Mattress is the smarter purchase as you will get better quality, sleep technology, and durability for about the same out of pocket cost.

My Green Mattress vs Happsy

What about My Green Mattress vs Happsy?  Here are the important quality differences that I’ve noted.

Coils

The difference in the coil structure between My Green Mattress and Happsy is significant.

The Happsy coils are monozone, meaning they are all exactly the same. There is no additional support for the lower back region and the coils at the edge of the mattress are the same as the middle of the bed.

On the other hand, My Green Mattress utilizes a pocketed coil system, that includes enhanced edge support to reduce roll-off, and nested lumbar support coils to provide subtle but important support to the lower back and align the body.

Organic Latex and Wool

My Green Mattress uses 50% more organic latex than Happsy. This helps reduce partner disturbance issues and provides additional comfort to the hips and shoulders.

Wool in Quilted Cover

Similar to the organic latex, there is also 50% more wool in the quilted cover of My Green Mattress versus Happsy.

This additional material not only improves comfort through additional cushioning but also increases the wicking and cooling capacity of the mattress.

More Durability

The Happsy mattress utilizes a slip-on, zippered cover. This means that the cover is not sturdily attached to the other layers of the mattress.

By comparison, My Green Mattress offers a much higher quality method. The cover is hand-tufted with extra stitching/buttons to firmly hold all the mattress layers together, which increases durability and prevents sagging.

What is the Best Quality Organic Mattress that Won’t Break the Bank?

In summary, when you look at the brands of organic mattresses on the market, three stand out as affordable, safe, and high quality.

Of these three, the Natural Escape model by My Green Mattress stands head and shoulders above the Avocado and Happsy in quality details that make a huge impact on lumbar support, overall comfort, prevention of sagging, and mattress durability.

It is also highly affordable in the $1000 range and looks particularly gorgeous as a platform bed (no box spring) as you can see in the picture from one of our bedrooms above!

I recommend the Organix Tranquiliti. It’s the organic version of Intellibed. https://organixbed.com/thehealthyhomeeconomist/

    Hi Sarah-
Do you know if the My Green Mattress is good for people that sleep hot (i.e. menopause)? Or do you think the Intellibed would be better for that?

Intellibed would be your best choice if you sleep hot because the inteligel does not absorb and retain heat like natural materials do. The intelligel is a manufactured material but it is completely nontoxic.

    Hi Sarah,
I just want to thank you for your very informative article on organic mattresses. I have been looking for organic mattresses for ages, and I was just going around in circles trying to figure out which ones to choose. When I saw your article I was thrilled, as I trust your opinion, and I was able to make a decision to buy from My Green Mattress company. You have helped me and my family greatly in your past articles, and we benefited from your advice. So I went ahead and ordered my mattresses from My Green Mattress company. Again thank you so much.

My husband is allergic to wool. Is there a mattress cover that would help with that? Thank you

I would recommend this waterproofing mattress protector made with organic cotton and a breathable moisture barrier. https://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/go/organic-mattress-protector/

Can you recommend a water proof cover? (We have young children and accidents happen!) Most are plastic and also would negate the benefits of a wool-covered mattress.

Also, are mattresses that we’ve had for several years safe because they have finished off-gassing?

Good question! Organic latex comes from the sap from the rubber tree and 100% free of chemicals … even people allergic to synthetic latex don’t usually have a reaction to it (only 1% or so do).

It’s not remotely similar to synthetic latex or memory foams in conventional mattesses that comes from petroleum which offgass chemical smells and fire retardants.

Another thing about organic latex is that it’s hypoallergenic with anti-microbial properties that make it resistant to dust mites, mold and mildew, which helps reduce allergens and allows you to breathe easier during sleep.

Which do you prefer for comfort- My Green Mattress or Intellibed? If Intellibed, which Intellibed do you prefer for comfort?

    • Sarah Pope MGA

      Jul 6, 2020 at 5:09 pm

My daughter is the only family member that has slept on both an Intellibed and a My Green Mattress. She says that she likes both equally well for comfort, but since we upgraded her to a full size mattress from a twin when we got her the My Green Mattress, she does enjoy the increased space tremendously.

My husband and I love our queen-sized Intellibed (Organix line), but it costs $4-5K which in this economic environment, is not possible for many people. But, everyone really needs to get off the toxic conventional mattresses, and so My Green Mattress is, according to my research, the best organic value by far if you can only spend $1000 or so. And, My Green Mattress has a 20 year warranty which is sensational. Intellibed has a 30 year warranty and so is more durable, but not everyone needs a mattress that will last that long.
