Gardasil: Guarding or Gutting Our Youth?

By Dr. Kelly Brogan MD

GardasilWhen I was in medical school, I had my first abnormal Pap, and it was quite abnormal, a precancerous lesion described as CIN2 (now revealed to be one of the most inaccurately diagnosed pathologies). I had two very unpleasant “therapeutic biopsies” called colposcopies, and two years later, it was normal.

That was that.

But I remember hearing about the approval of the Gardasil vaccine when I was a resident and thinking, “Amazing! Today’s girls are so lucky.” I have a very different perspective on this intervention today; in fact, my feminist sensibilities are outraged at what is being done to girls and young women around the world.

I’d like to share an introductory primer to these concerns. Be forewarned, after reading this, you might have trouble enlisting pharmaceutical companies to keep you healthy in the future.

One Size Fits All?

This is, perhaps the most important concept to wrestle with when it comes to providing and mandating pharmaceutical products in otherwise healthy populations. These products are based on a now largely antiquated notion of exposure to virus = infection and, as a corollary, that antibody production = protection.

Now we know that neither of those premises are true.

I recently hired a team of burly individuals to remove the poison ivy that had overgrown in our front yard. How did they do it? With their bare hands. These individuals were naturally immune. My dad, on the other hand, came back in with a new crop of blisters every time he walked outside.

I’m sure you’ve been the one who has been left unscathed when the flu ran through your house, or maybe you’re the one who always seems to get sick. This is an every-day representation of inter-individual variability in immunity. Our best understanding of this concept hinges on inherited variants in genes that encode for immune response mechanisms, and then the different expression of these variants in the setting of environmental factors.

There are seemingly infinite variables accounting for the immune response through natural mucosal exposure, and we don’t have any better of a grasp on why different people respond differently to vaccines, which bypass natural immunity and provoke inflammatory responses.

measles graphicIt is a noble intention to protect the population from the ravages of infectious disease; however, this intention is an impossible one to achieve through current vaccination science.

A productive discussion of this concern by Poland et al references variable response to the Measles vaccine as depicted in the graphic to the right.

We also know that antibody production, even if it does occur, is not always necessary or sufficient for protection since agammaglobulinemics have demonstrated normal progression of disease even though they are not capable of making antibodies, and outbreaks of many different diseases have occurred in highly vaccinated populations.

Back to cervical cancer. Once again, we have a one-size fits all recommendation for healthy women to prevent an extremely rare outcome — death from cervical cancer. Let’s take a look at how to evaluate the considerations for you or someone you know:

1. Not Indicated:  I’m afraid that the propaganda around “One less” has been in service of fearmongering around a not-so-scary problem. In the developing world, and with the use of routine Pap smears, the incidence of cervical cancer deaths are 1.4-1.7/100,000. There are 15 (known) of 100 different strains of human papilloma virus, and the vaccines reportedly protect against 2 of these. The natural course of infection with any of these strains has been demonstrated to involve resolution of 70% of infections within one year and 90% within 2-3 years. Of the remaining, unresolved infections, only 5% of those typically progress to cancer. Thus, we have an effective, extremely low risk to no risk intervention that is already doing the job of detecting these misbehaving cells (the Pap), and if there is not spontaneous resolution, we have effective surgical interventions such as the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP).

2. Not Effective:  So, if we are suggesting that this vaccine is unnecessary, is it effective at what it claims to do, which is prevent deaths? This question remains unanswered, despite fast-track approval by the FDA in 2006, because cervical cancer takes about 20-40 years to manifest. The trials that have been done — sponsored by the pharmaceutical company producing the product — have used HPV infection associated cellular changes called CIN1-3 as a surrogate for cancer.

Thus, the premise for asserting efficacy rests on speculation that abnormal lesions will progress to cancer, which we have already discussed, they do not, most of the time.

For the reasons above, this involves a major theoretical leap. When infection by all types of HPV are considered, efficacy drops to <40% as discussed in a stunning analysis by Tomljenovic et al. who quote:

“Modeling indicates that HPV vaccination [with Cervarix] will prevent potentially 17% of the abnormal Pap tests based on current knowledge of HPV type distribution and only a very few cancers that Pap testing would not have detected, not enough to lower the population incidence of cervical cancer lower than what screening already accomplishes.”

This post discusses, in depth, the suspect interpretation of the available data, but perhaps, as we shall see below, one of the bigger concerns is the incidence of high grade lesions after receiving the vaccine arguing not only for lack of efficacy, but for active risk.

3. Not Safe:  At this point in time, the death rate from cervical cancer has been outpaced by the incidence of deaths (>108 currently) and serious adverse events (24,184 including 1300 in pregnant women) reported to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System since 2006.

VAERS graphicThese adverse events include but are not limited to: deaths, convulsions, paralysis, paraesthesia, demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system (i.e., multiple sclerosis and acute disseminating encephalomyelitis), Guillain-Barre´ syndrome (GBS), transverse myelitis, facial palsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, anaphylaxis, autoimmune disorders, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolisms, pancreatitis, visual impairments and spontaneous abortions. If these more anonymous incidences aren’t swaying you, then consider the case of two deaths of young women after receiving the vaccine in which the vaccine strain of HPV was found adhered to the vessels of their inflamed brain tissue.

The meticulous analysis is discussed in this paper as is the curious fact that the coroner did not look for autoimmune pathology in the post-mortem assessment despite the fact that encephalitis is a known side effect of vaccination. Because “placebo” in many of the studies designed to demonstrate vaccine safety often contains toxic immune disabling adjuvants, like aluminum, in this case, it is not a valid assessment of risk. We know that metals like aluminum get carried across the blood brain barrier by immune cells called macrophages, and incite further immunologic cascades in the brains of some vaccine recipients.

Related to my initial discussion of lack of individualization of these recommendations, it is not recommended that women be screened for pre-existing exposure to HPV even though they are at higher risk for exacerbated pathology post-vaccination, and no effort is made to determine who might be at risk for an autoimmune reaction, such as HLA typing. In all likelihood, we don’t sufficiently understand the immune system to predict who is going to have an adverse reaction.

It may be thus appropriate to ask whether it is worth risking death or a disabling life-long neurodegenerative condition such as GBS at a pre-adolescent age for a vaccine that has only a theoretical potential to prevent cervical cancer, a disease that may develop 20 to 40 years after exposure to HPV, when the same can be prevented with regular Pap screening.

Safe Alternatives to Gardasil

If we have known risk factors, such as chronic inflammation, immune system suppression due to suboptimal hygiene and/or nutrition, smoking, long-term use of oral contraceptives (OC) and multiple sexual partners conducive to sexually transmitted diseases, then what can we do to minimize risk and maximize spontaneous resolution of abnormal Paps? Well, I’ve discussed some of my feelings on the Pill in this post here, so I certainly suspect that this prescription played a role in my own dysplasia. Cervical cells replenish every 7-14 days and here are 3 natural agents that may help optimize that cell division and correct for mistakes made in the process:

  • Vitamin A– Topical application of retinoic acid or preformed vitamin A has been shown, in a randomized trial , to promote regression in 43% of CINII. High retinol foods include animal meats (notably liver) and eggs.
  • Folate — Because so many of us now have genetic variants that disturb our metabolism of folic acid and food-based folate (dihydrofolate), I always recommend a methylated folate or l-methylfolate in a dose about 1mg daily (but ranging from 400mcg-5mg). This is best accompanied by B6, B2, B1, and B12, but the research has been done on synthetic folic acid and primarily in CINI. Hypomethylation has been identified as a factor in progression to carcinoma in papers like this, but there is more to methylation than just synthetic folic acid. I recommend learning your MTHFR genetic status through a simple blood test and optimizing methylation in ways discussed on this site.
  • Indole 3 Carbinol — This is a phytochemical in cruciferous vegetables which enhances beneficial metabolism of estrogen. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, both 200mg and 400mg daily resulted in regression of CINII at 12 weeks in roughly half the cases relative to none of the placebo arm.

These recommendations, would, of course be in the context of more generally supporting healthy cell division and immune function through minimizing toxic exposures and maximizing nutrient density with a diet rich in natural fats, proteins, and whole food carbs like resistant starches and fruits.

Always scratch a bit beneath the surface when it comes to pharmaceutical recommendations and particularly ones that may undermine your health. I would wager that most of the women disabled by the HPV vaccines aren’t smugly asserting that they are “One less”… they are saying “I wish I’d known.”

before I started seeing holistic/alternative doctors, the NP at my doctor’s office tried giving it to me. I said NO THANKS! They don’t even test boys for it, and they encourage them to get the vaccine? What’s the point!?

BTW, many countries have banned this vaccine or discontinued it. That should tell us something…

My daughter had gotten two rounds of Gardasil, going back 2009, by the time I heard about the warnings. So where does that leave me now, wondering how it will adversely affect her life? Is she going to be sterile, develop MS ,etc.

My 15 year old daughter has had the 3 Gardasil injections and up until then she was very fit, active and a high achiever. This year she has only been to school for 6 days and has spent the past 7 months in and out of hospital with unexplained anaphylaxis reactions. As the medical profession can not find a reason for this, the only other option is whether the Gardasil has played a part??????

    Any thoughts please?

It sounds like an adverse reaction to Gardasil. Look up the vaccine insert to see the list of 24 known side effects which were reported during trials. Then read about the side effects reported after Gardasil was put on the market. These are also found in the vaccine inserts. Please find a naturopath or another alternative practitioner who can help your daughter get the toxins out of her body. And please get your doctor to report your child’s vaccine reaction – the law requires it.

I hope she gets no worse and that you are able to find someone to help her. Good luck.

Susan, I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. My daughter was also injured by the vaccine. I am part of a fantastic support group via Facebook. If you have access, look me up and I can get you in the group.

In the meantime, there are two very good sites: and Your daughter is not alone and yes, you are correct in that the medical community doesn’t know how to treat her. My girl has been sick for 19 months and we are finally starting to see some improvement through homeopathic care.

I had this vaccine a few years ago because my mom really wanted me to have it, and back then, I didn’t know how harmful vaccines could be… I never had any health problems since, but I wonder, could it expose me to future problems ? If I lead an healthy life, as I try to, could the vaccine have no consequences for me, ever ?

(sorry for the weird syntax/tenses, I’m french !)

This is another one of Merck’s obscure helter skelter fear promoted drugs. The percentages of deaths from cervical cancer is so incredibly low that this will never be worth all of the risks. This is not even on the CDC’s radar. This is a corporate money grab at public funds.

I just have a sinking feeling that a whole generation of women will develop fertility issues because of this. SOME SORT of “oops” is coming in which Merck just says “prove it” and shrugs.

Well guess what I am all for the vaccine and all vaccines

Hubby had polio as a child, and is now suffering from Post polio syndrome

less then 5% of people with polio get more then the flu, and of that group 5% were left paralyzed. However ever person who got polio or summer gripe will get some form of Post Polio Syndrome. In my husband’s case he has severe paralytic polio and the syndrome will do what the disease failed to do when he was 6 months old, it will kill him as it slowly paralyzes him again and it will end when it again paralyzed the diaphragm. Why will it kill him. Well we no longer have the iron lungs available. And he has no wish to spend the rest of his years hooked up to a ventilator that will not do as good as a job.

And as for the gardisal vaccine, yep only a few will get the cx cancer. Well I have had it twice and it almost made me infertile. So yep my daughter got that vaccine

But I know this is a waste of time as you are all anti vaccine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You’ve got that wrong, Cynthia. I am not anti-vaccine. I am anti-neurotoxin. This particular vaccine is filled with them. The past 18 months of our lives have been horrifying: physically, emotionally, and financially. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I continue to push for more research into WHY certain girls and boys are impacted and others are not. Neurological and autoimmune issues can be life-changing, The struggles that you and your family have faced and continue to deal with sound very difficult. I wish you all the best.

Thank you for a superb article.
I made a list of unanswered questions concerning Gardasil and arrived at 27. The list is not even complete! Here are some of the questions for which neither the Gardasil manufacturer Merck nor other promoters including health authorities and doctors are able to provide satisfactorily documented answers.
Whether Gardasil prevents cancer, necessity for boosters, whether it increases the risk of cancer due to the ingredients, whether there is increased risk of cancer due to the strains which are removed being replaced by more carcinogenic ones, whether there is increased risk of cancer due to the unexpected discovery by an independent laboratory of aluminium bound recombinant HPV DNA, whether Gardasil vaccinated may donate blood without the aluminium bound recombinant HPV DNA causing serious health consequences for the recipient, whether there is increased risk of autoimmune disorders due to the recombinant HPV DNA, if cervical cancer is caused by HPV or if there must be a necessary additional factor for this to occur, if HPV is necessarily an infection transmitted by sexual intercourse, whether the vaccine causes genotoxicity, whether it targets the relevant virus strains in different demographics, whether the strains change in the course of time, adverse events due to concomitant administration with other vaccines, the true numbers and extent of serious adverse events, long term serious side effects, what the results would be if a true placebo had been used in all the clinical trials, what the results of clinical trials would be if Merck had not used their own exclusion criteria, whether there is increased risk of blood clots with or without hormonal contraceptives, whether there is an increased risk of brain damage, consequences of “bridging” – the extrapolation of study results from one group to another, potentially serious consequences if the vaccine is not thoroughly shaken, whether the vaccine will increase the risk of infertility due to polysorbate, whether polysorbate is carcinogenic, health consequences due to the presence of the combination of polysorbate and l-histidine, whether aluminium adjuvant is safe, consequences due to the presence sodium borate (borax), whether the vaccine will increase the risk of miscarriages, stillbirths or babies born with anomalies, whether Gardasil is excreted in human milk, the complete list of ingredients, whether possible benefits outweigh the risks.

Thanks for writing this article. I had HPV detected via a pap years ago, within 18 months it had cleared on its own ( although I did have further testing done to check it wasn’t one of the cancer causing types), I still have no idea how I contracted it. Anyway I have two friends who had pap smears done that came back clear, but within months they had developed cervical cancer…how does that happen when cervical cancer is suppose to take so long to develop?

Dr. Brogan I want to thank you for this gift to parents.
When my daughter was vaccinated with Gardasil my childhood friend was dying of cervical cancer, I had been caring for hospice patients including patients with cervical cancer. I was trying to protect my only daughter. I had no idea a delayed hypersensitivity reaction existed. I had no idea you could walk away from a vaccine fine with no symptoms and then weeks later start having hives….triggered by that vaccine. I believed the immunologist after the second shot who said he didn’t feel the hives were connected to Gardasil. Her third shot was July 11, 2012. 2 weeks later her hives were markedly worse. It is this time of year last year she started to get really bad and I started to get really scared. Her hives were so bad she couldn’t sleep, then wheals appeared on her hands and feet, they had dark centers, she started limping with joint pain, she had waves of nausea and vomiting. She was pale and would have to sit down from dizziness. COVERED in hives, welts everywhere. Its been a year. My daughter suffers with this autoimmune disorder, it was most definitely triggered by the Gardasil vaccine, we are in vaccine court along with 100 other families. She is 16 STILL not sexually active, at very low risk for cervical cancer and I was completely taken for a ride. I never heard one concern about Gardasil, not one safety concern. I only saw the “One Less” commercials that have disappeared for some strange reason and now my daughter has an autoimmune disease. I will never forgive myself. I cry myself to sleep.

To make it even clearer, if a girl already has HPV and gets the vaccine it actually increases the risk of cancer by 40%, yet they are not testing these young people beforehand to see if they already have HPV! If this is not immoral, I don’t know what is.
Another tidbit of information coming out is that we are now seeing strains of HPV in young Americans that rarely showed up before or that were the more prevalent strains in othe regions of the world. So once rare and equally dangerous strains are now taking the place of 16 and 18, the ones in the vaccine. Nature abhorrs a vacuum. And even children who have never engaged in sex at all can still have HPV. It may have been passed from Mother to Child during birth, especially if the mother did not know at the time she had it, and most times it has no symptoms. The risks far outweigh any theoretical benefits in this vaccine, so much so that it is not even close. It should be removed from the market before it kills and disables any more innocent young girls and boys. There is no science behind any of this….just money on one side and misery on the other.

I have two children, a young man of 16 and a young lady of 14. Each time we are at their doctor’s office for their annual, the doctor reminds me of the “opportunity” of the gardasil vaccination. I have gotten to the point that when it is brought up I just put my hand up, explain that I know all there is to know about the vaccine, thank the doctor for his information but happily remind the doctor that we will not be taking advantage of the vaccine and I ask him kindly to note of their charts/files. I love the doctor and and he is very respectful of my decision, but I don’t understand why he is pushing the issue. He keeps reminding me “if helps prevent 4 cancers”. My question is always the same, “and what about the hundreds of other cancers and STDs.

I’ve worked with too many children and teens that have experienced adverse effects directly caused by vaccine adjuvants (metals, chemicals). Most parents will tell me that they felt pressured or rushed to vaccinate their children. They wish they took the time to properly educate themselves before making a decision. Your words are powerful and life-changing!

Besides training your children to eat well, wouldn’t training them to value sexual purity until marriage do more for them than vaccinations? My husband and I were virgins when we married, and our four grown sons also maintained their purity until marriage as did their wives. None of us have any regrets. In a world gone crazy, there are a lot of traditional values that could use some resurrecting!!

I am the parent of a child who has been injured by this vaccine. I will tell you that my daughter’s doctor said, and I quote: “You could be the best virgin the world has ever seen but this virus is everywhere and you are at risk”. I trusted the doctor when she said it was safe and I wanted to protect my daughter.

So often, this is viewed as a sexuality or promiscuity issue. It simply is not. Those of us that speak out are viewed one of two ways: living in the dark ages because we can’t accept our precious child’s sexuality OR accepting their sexuality and playing fast and loose with our kids. One more blow but we’re used to it. You see, when your child is one of those impacted, medical doctors do not know how to restore your child’s health. I’d take the criticism any day if it would mean my daughter would be health.

Great article. It seems the human race is over medicated in general these days doesn’t it… Its sad really. Thank you for getting information out there and making people think. I am a bit confused about the point you are making regarding poison ivy though. It was my understanding that poison ivy is something you either are or are not allergic to not something you are or are not immune to. In other words the plant is not harmful but some if not most people will mount an immune response just as some people mount an immune response to grass or ragweed. Obviously those getting poison ivy may over time get their allergic rxn in check by natural exposure and thus not develop the rash… Was that what you were pointing out? This to me seems different than an immune response from a pathogen such as HPV or influenza…not that I support either vaccine :o)

That and seeing those incessant Gardasil ads in ‘Parade’ and similar newspaper mini-magazines definitely gives me the shutters! Everyone should watch Clint Richardson’s ‘Lethal Injection’ documentary as it definitely explains a lot. Vaccination has a horrific history and has been entangled with state power and the Rockefeller depopulation machine for many years. You just can’t prevent disease by injecting it into people! Most clear up on their own. You can freeze them off but I was given a cream many years ago called “aldara” I believe. It is supposed to encourage your bodies natural immune response. It worked great for me. HPV is a virus so you probably won’t have any signs of it unless you have a weakened immune system. I have had it for over 10 years and have only had small blister like warts on one occasion when I was sick for a whole month…think I had mono but I was young and didn’t go to the doc because I didn’t have insurance and I wasn’t dying- just exhausted with a very sore and swollen throat. I did have to be treated once for mild dysplasia of my cervix a year or so ago. Cryotherapy. I was stressing alot at the time over things that I couldn’t change immediately in my life and I think this stress probably contributed to a weakened immune system…got sick in general more than usual that year. Anywho… from talking to other women this is all pretty common and treatable…I did have high hopes for gardasil though. I was so angry when I was younger because I always got tested and had my partners tested. No doc ever mentioned hpv and they don’t test men for it! Keep asking though for our daughters sake…condoms don’t protect you from it either just like herpes- if you didn’t already know.

      Hi Andrea,

My daughter (nor my son) will get this vaccine. My daughter’s classmates have recently had the second of the three shot series at their middle school. Many have had to go home after the shot, many fainted, some vomited and one of her good friends has now had unexplained stomach “aches” and cramps on and off since the first shot. She has missed a lot of school and sport. Her mother thought she had appendicitis but no. It is still “unexplained”.

Everything written here by Dr Brogan has confirmed everything else I have read about the hpv vaccine. What she writes about keeping healthy with whole foods that are known to prevent cancer cells proliferating is what you should concentrate on. That is the key to keeping the body free from disease. Look up which foods are known to prevent the proliferation of cancerous cells and which foods feed cancerous cells. One of my favorite websites is Health Impact

Good luck and go with your gut on this dangerous and useless vaccine.

Jennifer, my daughter suffered a serious adverse event following the vaccine. It has been a very long, difficult, and complicated path but we are slowly restoring her health. I am part of an online support group (via Facebook). Perhaps we could help your friend and her daughter? I remember how overwhelming it was to try to figure everything out on my own. The support that if offered through this group is amazing. Learning from those that are further down the path is invaluable.

If your friend is interested, have her find me on Facebook under my name shown above. Another alternative would be Have her send a message to the administrator of that page and she can also assist.

Thank you, Tracie. I will pass on your details. Unfortunately, at this time her parents have not linked her symptoms to the vaccine. But of course they have been given no other explanation by the medicos. I am not close to her mother but I will let her know that there are other girls who are suffering mysterious problems after the shots and the common denominator is the shots.

We do not vaccinate at all in our family and I never planned to allow my daughter to get Gardasil, but I still read up on it after receiving the info pack from the school. I was appalled at the lack of information given to parents and I still cannot believe anyone would make a decision based on that paltry amount of information. Thank you again and I will encourage her to at least read what your group has to say.

So much is still to be known about the immune system and viruses. Really cervical cancer is rare and doesn’t warrant pharmaceutical intervention.

Both of my daughters have had this series of shots, and yes, I am now wishing I had known. When I had them get it, it was before my real food journey began. Before I started finding out about the horrible man made things in our lives. So, what do I do now? I see how lucky we were that they didn’t have any adverse reactions, but what about long term? Now that it’s done and over with, is there anything else I can do to avoid long term health issues? Thanks for all you write about!

I wonder if the GAPS diet would help eliminate toxins left by Gardasil. It’s used to help children with autism, so I would assume it would eliminate toxins from vaccines.

Anytime!!! Anytime!!! Anytime that you vaccinate….there is going to be some sort of immune response….and since this has chemicals introduced into the vax besides the virus….which as we all know only works AT BEST!!!! 50% of the time….it is just not worth
the problems they cause!!!!! The autism rate is now the last I heard…up to 1 in 50-70…15 yrs ago it was 1 in 150….tell me that vaxes aren’t an issue….and that is on babies and children….adults show in totally different and remarkably different ways…is it any wonder that our society is deteriorating from the inside out and WILL collapse upon itself. Think Ancient Rome….not from outside but the inside and just as surely by our own hand as theirs was…..what a wonderful thought!!!

My perfectly healthy daughter was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis shortly after receiving this vaccination. I warn everyone I know to never let their daughters get this vaccination. My daughter is turning 21 shortly and her Dr. is talking about how she may have to go on disability because its too hard fro her to walk at her job, her hands swell so badly that she can’t type, and the doctors can’t seem to get the RA under control. I wish the people who made this vaccine would get RA too, so they know how it feels.

Yes, this vaccine is horrible. I have a friend that unknowingly had her daughter vaccinated and has had nothing but unexplained illness for months. I had another friend whose did a research paper on it, thinking that she could persuade others to take it in her high school, and she was shocked into speaking against it! She still says that she can’t believe how much deception surrounds this vaccine. Thanks so much for warning folks. Our children need protection from those who want to profit off of them.
