Dr Weston A Price taught that all grains should be freshly ground, as pre ground flour turns rancid very quickly and loses its nutritional value. This grain mill sounds like it makes the process both practical and easy.

Bran provides no nutrition, and can irritate the stomachs of many people,which makes the sifting attachment of great value.

Good to know that they are making appliances like this.

Yes, good point. Bran is really just fiber which can definitely irritate those with gastric issues. My husband has issues with bran so I always sift our flour. Love that sifting attachment as sifting by hand is such a pain!

I’ve tried looking through several of your articles and videos lately about grinding grains because I no long buy flour from the store and I’m trying to learn how to do it right. Can you send me a previous link where you’ve mentioned needing/choosing to sift the flour? Getting very confused here. And this latest article doesn’t make it any easier because it reads like a commerical for Komo.

Since it grinds corn, can it be adjusted to grind grits, also? Isn’t corundum used in sharpening stones? I’ve always wanted a small grain grinder with natural stones instead of the steel burrs, because it makes a better product. The finished product doesn’t get as hot during grinding with the stones as the steel burrs.

Yes, one of the best things about the KoMo grain grinders is that they don’t heat up the flour. Not sure about grits .. I know one of the KoMo grinders (the Duet) does flaking as well as grinding … check the link above to take a look.

I was just on the Breadtopia website where they have a 2 part video, comparing the KoMo grinder along with the Wonder Mill and the NutriMill. They run a test for speed, noise and flour temp. You might want to check it out. While the KoMo ran the coolest, the difference was not very much. 100 degrees for KoMo, 102 for Wonder Mill and up to 106 for the NutriMill.

Hi, I posted somewhere else here–you can defnintely coarse grind corn for grits on this. It’s so delicious. The corn comes out sweet and almost juicy when it’s course ground. But find is nice too and makes for a smoother, polenta-like porridge.

I believe that Berkshire Bakery uses large mill stones made in Austria, if I’m not mistaken. They support the Weston Price foundation and have a great website. I look forward to getting my own grain mill. Not only do I want some fresh ground wheat, but my own cornmeal from heirloom corn seeds I got from Carol Deppe last year, but grits also. The place Sara gets her wheat from has an online store in my state and as soon as I get a mill, I definitely want to order some wheat.

Wow. That is beautiful! I love my Wondermill, but this would be awesome. Funny that this was the post you just put up. I was reading & researching some stuff on grains & natural yeast & headed over to your page to share a link with you. This is from Caleb Warnock who co-wrote the Baking with Natural Yeast book that recently came out. Not necessarily sour dough yeast, but natural sweet yeast. I absolutely love my Wondermill. I used to have a stone grinder, which was a lovely wooden model… but I sold it, and bought the Wondermill when I saw the resulting fine-grind of flour. I couldn’t get a pastry flour from my stone-mill. The best I could hope for was a coarse grind. Plus, it’s so much quieter, and has such a vertical, small footprint on my countertop.

What a timely post. I just discovered the KoMo yesterday on the Pleasant Mill site. Top of my wish list is the model with the hand activated flaker. I can’t get over how beautiful they are. When I love a tool or a garget I tend to use it more. I will be taking on some extra jobs to have one of these by the holidays. I love your take on it. Thanks.

I hide my old and nearly worn out grain mill under the counter when not using as it is so ugly! A KoMo could be displayed on the kitchen counter all the time as a functional work of art for sure!

I assume this also requires electricity to operate?

What about a Retsel, Country Living, or Grain Maker – ALL made in the USA.

I have the KoMo fidibus medium. I absolutely LOVE it!! Its money well invested if you grind your own flour. There’s no cleanup and its nice enough to stand on your counter ready to use when you need it!

Any info on how well it does with sprouted grains? I’ve had my eye on this mill for a few years now but haven’t wanted to splurge on it yet though my grain attachment on my vitamix is a pain to use but does the job (aside from heating and sweating a lot). It would be awesome if you did a comparison of available mills on the market and pros and cons!!! :)

As long as the sprouted grain has been thoroughly dried in a dehydrator or warm oven (no higher than 150F) before grinding into sprouted flour, then yes the KoMo would work fine.

I have the komo pk pictured above, and have had itfor a year and a half. I have ground sprouted wheat in it.
I thought I read in my booklet NOT to grind beans and corn in it. I may be wrong, but I thought I read that.
I bought it because of the look and the noise factor.

Valerie. You can grind corn (called field or dent corn) in it, but NOT popcorn. I have no idea why–maybe the shape getting caught in the round hole for the grinding stones. As for beans, I don’t recall if they are ok. but if you go to the pleasant hill grain site, they give you ALL the details of allowable grinding. And in most grinders, no seeds are allowed. I do field corn in mine on a coarse grind for grits. Hope this helps.

I have one of these and love it. They do have a range of prices, the lower end models are beechwood laminate, and the higher end are solid beechwood. They carry electric and manual. I bought an electric grain mill, as I read it is difficult to grind grain by hand. However, it is not difficult to roll grain by hand, so I hope to purchase a manual grain roller soon. I find warm grain makes for better product, so I grind fresh before each baking. I also keep a gallon bag of flour in the freezer for when I need just a small amount.

this is the first I’ve heard of separating the bran from freshly ground flour … I thought we were grinding our grain fresh so we could get the WHOLE grain … didn’t realize that it was the bran that was hard on the digestion! I promise I don’t live under a rock – I work hard to keep up on the latest healthy food news! But I am definitely going to have to try sifting out the bran. Would you still soak your grains even if you’ve sifted out the bran? Please tell me more! Thanks!

I wrote a long post about the benefits and design features of the KOMO, from my ‘smart’ phone, which apparently ‘dropped the call’! And so I see no post here from me.

Paid ad or not, Pleasant Hill Grain is an authorized servicer of this product. They have REAL people to give REAL answers to your questions. Best customer support I’ve ever experienced.

I would highly recommend making your purchase through them. But if not, their site has the most comprehensive info about the KOMO mills of any other I’ve found. You can do side by side comparisons of cost, feature, capacity, size, etc.

Be aware you can’t grind popcorn or oily seeds or nuts. But all else is listed on PHG’s website. I make my own organic grits. It is sweet and nutty and chewy. The grind is infinitely adjustable — ie, it doesn’t have a set position of specific choices. You just turn the top for the desired consistency…
The flour does get warm, but no worse than with any other mill I’ve used. The benefit of feeding into an open container is that the flour stays a little cooler and you can just keep going, pour off what you need, and grind some more –no container to detach and clean out and reseal. Such a timesaver.

Another plus is you can buy another set of stones and spout, if you have someone with gluten sensitivities and cannot have even the slightest dust from gluten grains mixed in. You can change out the stones and spout cup to keep separately for gluten-free grinding.

For cleanup of the unit, an occasional shopvacuuming is recommended to keep dust from building up under the motor. You just hold the nozzle over the stones. The general consumer wouldn’t open anything up for maintenance. To get buildup off the stones, you just ocasionally run a small amount of rice through the mill at medium grind.

This is an amazing machine. Its worth saving for! Hope these tips help. Sorry for any ‘unsmart’ typos from the ‘smart’ phone!

I want to second what Cindy L. wrote. I have a NutriMill (love it) and I bought it from Pleasant Hill Grain several years ago. I was so, so impressed by what kind and caring service they gave me. Just down to earth, friendly people that seemed to genuinely care about my making the right purchase.

This KoMo mill sounds pretty neat. I might look into if I needed a grain mill. But I don’t. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting the latest thing you hear about and, let’s face it, that’s part of the fun of all of the experimental cooking that many of us do. So if you need a new mill, by all means check this out. Especially if you need the gluten free grinding aspects part of the time. What a cool feature! If you already have a grain mill, count yourself blessed.

I had been trying to decide which brand and what kind (manual or electric) of grain mill to buy for months. I was so sick and tired of buying whole wheat flour and opening the bag and it was rancid! I first bought a manual Wondermill Junior and found it to be a whole lot of work, no place to set it up, store it, etc. I finally just bit the bullet and went for the KoMo Fidibus Classic even though it was twice as much as I had budgeted. I am SO GLAD I bought it. There it sits on my counter, too beautiful to put in a cupboard, it is gorgeous. It doesn’t take any more space than my blender. It does a wonderful job of milling all my grains. I cannot see this thing breaking down in 1-3 years the way most appliances seem to do. This unit is going to last a long, long time. It is very simple. I am so happy with this grain mill!

I bought a manual grain mill first because someone I’d talked to said they were good to have on hand when the electric mill breaks down and is sent in for repairs. That was over two years ago. This past year I’ve only bought three 5lb bags of flour and I ground the rest manually. I didn’t do near as much baking and take out pizza was a regular because manual grinding is so time consuming. I finally bought an electric mill last month and oh, what a difference in the quality of foods we eat. Last night I made homemade flatbread pizzas, so although the electric mill was an expense I’m saving on take out food and my family is eating better.
I tried the drill bit attachment for the Wonder Mill Jr. It takes an expensive drill with variable speeds (that I’m sure would quickly be snatched up by one of my boys and covered in grease for every use).

To those of you who have tried the sifting-attachment from Komo: What kind of extraction rates do you get, when sifting with the attachment? Do you get rid of ALL of the bran with this sifting-attachment or is just part of it?

Branless flour is about 75% extraction or something like that right?

Have some of you(Sarah?) achieved that?

If so, was it time-consuming, hard, easy?

Did you mill the flour coarser before you sifted or something?

Is there a good instruction-video for this process on the internet?

Loved your post: KoMo mills really are that good! I use a Classic, and it is absolutely wonderful. I really liked that it was easy to clean without any tools or anything…I’m not the most tool handy person :P

These guys posted an interesting review of the KoMo grain mills on their blog: apparently the different mills have different sized motors? Is there some benefit to using a bigger motor besides the obvious increased speed?
