Dr. David Carpenter MD, a graduate of Harvard Medical School and a physician who has worked in the area of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and public health for over 18 years, has a few choice words for power companies that are forcing smart meters down the throats of their customers all over the United States.
Dr. Carpenter adamantly insists that there is no evidence whatsoever that smart meters are in any way safe for human beings. He goes on to say that there is, in fact, ample evidence that demonstrates “convincingly and consistently” that exposure to radiofrequency radiation (RFR) at elevated levels for long periods of time increases the risk of cancer, damages the nervous system, and adversely affects the reproductive organs.
Dr. Carpenter says that an informed person should demand that they be allowed to keep their analog meter.
The two minute video interview with Dr. Carpenter below is well worth watching.
If you are having smart meters forced upon you where you live, know that California power customers have recently won the battle to keep their analog meters. There is both an annual and monthly charge for this “inconvenience” to the power utilities, but at least customers now have a choice to opt out where they did not before.
This precedent for opting out in California should make it easier for others with smart meters who don’t want them in other areas of the United States to be able to get their analog meters back as well.
While smart meters reduce workload and increase profitability for the power companies, they do so at the expense of the health of their customers. Opting out is the only “smart” way to deal with this corporate incursion.

This is the first I have heard of this. We are getting smart meters installed in the next month. Where is the danger? Are there increased RFRs directly around the meter outside or is it increased in the home? I definitely am going to do my homework………..
The farther away you are, the less danger but the area of high EMFs around smart meters is quite a distance. Even if it’s on the other side of the house by the garage, it’s a problem. As Dr. Carpenter suggests, opting out is the best way to go for your long term health.

Smart Meters emit RF radiation which is the same dangerous radiation cell phones emit. EMF’s are more from household appliances, power lines, etc.
I look at the extra 12.00 monthly as if I were buying a bottle of vitamins. It is worth the price.
Here in Maine the Public Utilities Commission made sure we were able to have an opt out option to keep our old meters. (Thank Goodness!) We had to pay 40 up front and then 12.00 per month in order to keep our homes safe.
As an occupational therapist, I have read how these EMFs can really have a negative affective on our children with sensory processing disorders. No one talks about how it harms these children and can exacerbate their symptoms.
They’ve got them in schools too! This will drive more people back into the home for homeschooling for sure over time.

Can you recommend any good printed literature I can give my neighbors about this? It seems that not only do you have to keep your house from getting a Smart Meter, but you also have to talk to your neighbors so that their Smart Meter does not transmit EMFs into your house as well?

Sarah,
Do you know about the TWACS meter? If so could you please pass the information along? I was told that my home is using this meter. Since moving into my home 2 years ago I have dificulty sleeping and have developed muscle and joint pain that the doctor has written of as fibromyalgia.
Also, my friend Stanley fighting the good fight against smart meters in CA told me about a necklace you can wear that helps diffuse the EMFs from smart meters. Stanley, if you are reading this, can you post the website for this? Thanks
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist\’s last post: Harvard Medical Doctor Warns Against Smart Meters
The necklace is called a Q-LInk, and provides some protection against emf emissions. Here is a link to the main website, which includes a lot of information about the product and what it does

You can also do some reserach on Orgonites. They are devices you can make yourself using simple metals, crystals and resin and they are supposed to neutralize and even change negative energy to positive energy. Can’t tell if they are working for us or not yet but my kids and I made some and we have them placed around the house and can put them in our pockets as well.
Here in NYC, we were told we’d be fined if we didn’t comply.
Over here in Northern California, they threatened to turn peoples power off. Eventually, groups of brave people raised so much hell they backed off.

^^ leave to r bloated gov to “know”whats best for us (scarasm)
It’s not govt thing.
This is a private ” free ” market, private company program. It saves them ( the utility company ) money, time and employees.
Like they gave us a choice. They had to wait 2 week to install ours cause they couldn’t get past the dogs in the yard..They caught me before I went to work.Nazi’s!
FPL came to my home without warning and installed it.
They just installed ours. I had no idea what it was. Is there any point in asking to have it removed if the entire neighborhood has smart meters?
Yes, there is. The amount of emf you get from these things goes down greatly with distance. Even a foot makes a difference, and twenty feet makes a huge difference, to the point where it does not effect most people.
Also, people have reported all kinds of problems from the :dirty electricity these things generate, though the power company denies it. While I am no expert, I understand that dirty electricity from these things is a problem only if you actually have a smart meter.
Stanley Fishman\’s last post: When it Comes to Food, “One Size Fits All” Fits Nobody
What is dirty electricity?
Same here, Amanda.
Thank you I shared it with my fb friends also
we just converted here in SW Florida…didn’t know there was a issue with it. Guess I will have to see what I can do about it.
We have one. There’s already a monopoly of power companies. We can only use Georgia Power even though a cooperative is closer.
We have Cobb EMC here in GA but I’m not sure if we have a smart meter or not. I’ll be checking on it. I wonder if our neighbors have it, will it affect me??
We have the same thing here. We have one provider, no choices. This past year they built a new power plant in a neighboring state and charged all of their customers in OUR state an extra $25 per month on their bill. We have what’s called balanced billing (our choice because it evens out the winter bill and the summer bill – our summer bills can get pretty high because the air conditioner costs a lot more to run than the furnace – don’t ask me why, it’s the same unit) and when our bill went up I called the company to ask why they did this without consulting us. When you sign up for balanced billing, you choose how much you want to pay each month after they average it out over a 12 month period. The lady at the service desk informed me it was a “no choice” situation. I asked her if there was any other kind with their company! She didn’t like that . . .
All houses here have them. It’s just how the power companies’ systems are set up. I don’t think there are any other options for us. What I am curious about is what we can do to reduce associated risk, now that we’re stuck with them?
Yes, now that it is on my house, what do I do. Can we buy something to cover it???
Cover it with tin foil. Also make a cap for your head out of it.
Thank you very much for this.
They installed them here in TX.
Sarah,
I was alarmed to learn a few months ago about how our activities can be monitored (and sold to the highest bidder!) with these meters. Check out this video…SCARY…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtLzIWtZtbs
Exactly Stephanie! These can be used to know what you are doing all day, and not only that: If the green police decide we need to all use less energy to “save the planet”, they can decide to charge you fees if you go over your “allowed” energy usage or if you run the A/C too long. With all our freedoms going out the window, you better believe this thing will be used for bad in the future.
The health implications are important, but I believe the privacy aspect is equally, if not more.
Actually the video didn’t say how to protect yourself. What do you do if it’s already in and you can’t take it off?
You are not stuck with them. Don’t just roll over on this one. This is a serious health threat. California just won the right to opt out with folks able to go back to the analogs. There is now a precedent for refusing them.
Can you still opt out if it is already on your house?
You can try .. there is now a precedent from California. This should help considerably. Don’t give up.
What do we do? Here in TX, they’ve installed them and said if we replace it, they’ll cut off our electricity.
They threatened the same thing here in Northern California. But this got publicity and created such an outrage that they promised not to turn off the power. People got organized, contacted their representatives at many levels, packed every meeting of the Public Utilities Commission, and kept raising hell until they offered the opt out.

Be interested to know how EMFs relate to Wifi. Our neighborhood’s (city slickers) a veritable wifi soup these days…
We are also stuck with everyone’s cell phone and tv waves going through the air. Whats one more at this point? I fail to see how just this one is going to make a difference when there is so much already.
Thank god I opted put!
How do we keep ourselves safe?
Well, I certainly hope when they come to my neighborhood I’ll be able to opt out. But paying extra for a safer home really rubs me the wrong way. We already go out of our way in the name of health to shop at farmer’s markets, pay extra for real food, and now this?! It seems doing things right is a real hassle.
I did some research on microwave technology last year and I was alarmed by the fact that so many of the objects in our homes actually have this frequency. I did go out to check if we have an analog or smart meter, and it turns out we have an analog…thank God. I wrote a post on my blog about the dangers of microwave technology, and at the end there are two videos. One video is short the other is very long, but its an interview with a man who helped invent microwave technology that we use now with WiFi, smart meters, walkie talkies, cordless phones, cell phones, baby monitors, and so on. Its pretty alarming.
We decided that this year we’ll be getting rid of as many microwave frequencies as we can. We’re going back to land line, corded phones, along with no more wireless internet connections. Its a good start.

how do you actually know if you have a smart meter or not? does it say it on the meter? my house has the same one that is pictured on the blog post…
I am so glad you shared this! For those who are just hearing about it, look deeper into it. It is a few hours well spent. Because I live in CA. I spent hours learning what I could to fight off having this stupid thing put on my house. I still don’t have one! But as you research, you will see what others have done to keep the electric company away. They caged their meter with chainlink and other devices so that no one could replace it with a smart meter. Those who had the meter installed, and now realize it is dangerous, had the smart meter ripped out and replaced with an analog by an electrician, so desperate they were to get the thing off their house.
In my research, I’ve seen pictures of plants near a smart meter that were strong before the installation of the new meter, but then died shortly after the new meter was put in. The government doesn’t think that is weird; the electric company says it is not the meters fault. But when you see several pictures of plants that died in different conditions and in different cities that were healthy at one point, and then suddenly died after a smart meter was put in, makes you wonder what it is doing to US!! Google “stop smart meters” and you will see tons of videos and research. I even came across a video while researching that showed how EMFs change the shape of our cells, which means they no longer work as they should. Why is that okay? It’s not in my book!
I also came across a video of a place in France that was removing all WiFi in public places because they realized the EMFs were making people sick -especially children. Leave it to Europe to be more advanced -once again- when it comes to health issues. BTW, the coalitions that fought the meters in CA are still fighting because they do not think it is fair that customers should be charged for not wanting a smart meter on their house. I hope they win that fight, too.
how do you know if you have a smart meter?
Alison\’s last post: $17
These meters are already in a lot of houses in Texas.
@Angela power companies have threatened to cut off people’s power, but have not done so anywhere else in the country. It would be a huge liability for them. I see this as an empty threat.
I heard (and this is third hand) that when a neighbor of a neighbor in the Dallas Metro Plex had theirs removed – not for health reasons but because it was inaccurate it took several days to get the power back on. Again I don’t have one of these meters and wont have them (I am on co-op power). Again – just hearsay.
This is the opt out CA info. Just not right that we’d have to pay extra every month. It isn’t in my budget.
Thats in addition to the $75 removal fee. http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_19869073
Ours is out on the power pole away from the house thankfully!!!
Thanks for sharing. …Just can’t win for losin’ these days! So disgusting!
Just found this:
Smart Meter Radiation Dangers Dark Side Part 1
http://youtu.be/ionX4ckX8e8
I just talked to someone at my power company, and they said they use a Sensus meter that is checked every 4 hours, for a second (and acted like that was no big deal). He said if we use cell phones we’re getting a lot more radio activity than we would through their smart meter (he said the ones they use are individual, not collector that would give off more signal). Any thoughts on this?
This is definitely something I will research more. My home doesn’t have one yet, but is scheduled to in the next few months.
Yes, and a TSA agent told me that the naked body scanners were just radio waves too and no big deal. Do your homework and don’t take the power companies word for it.
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist\’s last post: Harvard Medical Doctor Warns Against Smart Meters
@Jan- This was the exact same crap I got from the electric company when they called asking why I refused the meter. It was always so condescending the way they asserted that the meter was no more dangerous than a cell phone. Um, those are dangerous too! One guy even said, “Oh, so you will nuke your food (I don’t) and go on the computer all day and talk on your cell phone while you drive, but you won’t have a smart meter on your house? You need to do some research, maam.” UGH! I wanted to scream, but I blew it off because I know when I’m 98 and still going strong, the guy from the electric company will be long gone from god-knows-what disease. And why will that be? Because I did the research and he opted to listen to what the electric company brain washed him with!
Go solar, get off the grid, build a windmill. Nobody needs the power company.
I am furious about this. I was home when they came to install that thing on my house and I told the guy to leave. I said I didn’t want the meter and then one morning, early, when I was still in bed, my electricity blinked off for a few seconds and I heard a lot of noise at the side of my house. I ran downstairs and the guy was literally running to the van with my analog meter. I yelled at him to put it back and he just got in the van and drove away. I have called and complained to DTE about this and they say there is nothing they can do. I am stuck with it. What a bunch of B.S.! I’m sick of this stuff. We have no rights, liberties, privacy left. We are being choked by big government. They are killing us slowly. Our food is making us sick. Our electricity is nuking us. And soon, if things don’t change, our medical system will decide if we can even get treated for the illnesses that are mostly caused by them.
Getting a locked gate for your home is one way to keep them out from what I’ve been told.
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist\’s last post: Harvard Medical Doctor Warns Against Smart Meters
You can also put a small fence around your analog meter with a lock on it. This has worked for some folks.
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist\’s last post: Harvard Medical Doctor Warns Against Smart Meters
Sample letter for your utility company.
I just called the electric company here and they said we have an ERT or radio transmission meter. It was just installed last year, but is not a smart meter, according to them. It enables them to drive by to get a reading rather than get out and check the meter. I’m thankful if that’s right, as there’s nothing “smart” about a smart meter.

Lately in the news there has been a lot of talk about radio frequency (RF) exposure in regards to smart meters. I am sure a lot of you have read about the problems out in California and other regions where people are calling for the meters to be taken out and the issues many utilities are having to deal with as a result of this pushback. The reality is that a lot of this public backlash is based on misconceptions and mismanaged public relations.
To help clarify and better inform the public, our employees and our customers, Marketing and the Product Management team has compiled references from leading organizations such as UTC, FCC and the World Health Organization that show there is no evidence that smart meter RF has any health effects to human beings.
These references are online and the link to the Sensus site, “Understanding RF and Smart Meters”, is located at: http://www.sensus.com/rf/index.xml .
Funny how that information was not updated to include the fact that the World Health Organization now has listed emissions from smart meters as a possible human carcinogen..
Anybody concerned about the issue would be better off getting information from an impartial medical source that does not make money from installing smart meters-

The above is a link to a letter sent by the American Association of Environmental Medicine to the California Public Utilities commission in January, about why smart meters should be banned.

Actually, it is the American Academy of Environmental Medicine. The letter explains that he information relied on by the FCC is obsolete.

Another thing scary about smart meters, is that apparently they are at risk of exploding (or at the very least malfunctioning and sparking)! I was already aware of the dangers of the radiation emitted, but this makes me even more certain I don’t want one installed at my house! That, and my power board is on the wall outside my bedroom, and not more than a few metres from my daughter’s bedroom.
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-news/exploding-smart-meters-are-endangering-householders-and-workers-claim/story-fn7x8me2-1226278664780
I did a bit more Googling and it seems that there have been several incidents of smart meters exploding in other parts of the world. Scary stuff. These things should be avoided like the plague!! I will certainly have words to say if they want to come install one around here (initially it was planned for 2010/2011 but something was held up…fortunately…at the time I knew less to nothing about the risks and dangers).
This is unbelievable! Thank you so much for posting on this issue! My husband and I were careful to choose the lowest radiation cell phones available, but I had no idea there was a device emitting 100 X the RF of a high RF cell phone on the side of my home! We just went out and checked and sure enough we have a smart meter! If you see me on the news in a few weeks it is because I bought and used this kit http://freedomtaker.com/ . The kit to replace your meter is $50 + shipping. If you scroll down, you will see that they also sell the legal letter (for you to send to the power company) included in the kit, separately for $10. Perhaps this would allow you to strong-arm your power company into changing it for you, and you could avoid purchasing the whole kit.

Yes, a smart meter is like having a cell phone tower attached to your house. Not good.

I have been on a crusade to lessen my family’s exposure to EMFs for the past few months due to my having developed a “new and exciting” cardiac arrhythmia about two years ago, and EMF being suspected to elicit arrhythmia episodes in EMF-sensitive individuals and also in individuals who already have arrhythmias. I had a separate, much less annoying, arrhythmia since age four. The new one, despite having been partially ablated via heart surgery last April, affects me much more than the one I have had since I was a child. I know for a fact that all of the previous homes I inhabited had analog meters, because I remember all of the little dials! Wouldn’t it be something if living in this nice, new house, with its “smart meter” was all it took to throw my system over the edge in terms of EMF exposure? Thanks again Sarah! Guess I will be buying that Earthing sheet now;-)
Nicole, The Non-Toxic Nurse\’s last post: Most Cribs Are Toxic, But There Are Safe Alternatives!
After reading this, I called my electric company (PPL) and asked about it. The customer service rep said we’ve had smart meters for 8 years and there’s no opt out (yet). It is really, really discouraging to find out that we have no choice in the matter. Even more so when she said “We (PPL) own the meters”!!! They can put whatever they want on my house if I want public electricity.
Yup, they’re pushing them on us in Hawai’i this year. There are folks who are protesting it and made a form that you can submit that you don’t want one installed, but I’m not sure if it guarantees they won’t install it. Have to get on that. I’ve been lazy about it, but this reminded me how important it is.
It is always a comfort to come to this website and “hear” the voice of reason in a world gone mad! Yes, out here in west Texas they slipped in and gave us a Smart Meter! I have already gone to a website and signed a petition for Texas; just a note to other Texans. There is a movement starting and everyone needs to help support it to stop any further encroachment. Speak up; tell your neighbors, your child’s teacher, your pastor, the stranger in line next to you. Just make sure that we get to dialogue about this and HAVE A SAY! There was a press release today in Austin by a lawyer (Tom Cryer) who has filed suit against the PUC for letting this happen. Thanks to everyone on this blog who refuses to let the lies continue!
This is all so frustrating. I know we have one, but we live in CA, so I’ll talk to my husband about opting out–$75 to replace it and $10 a month.
But, we have wireless internet and a wireless alarm. What’s one to do? We don’t have a microwave anymore, so I guess that’s good, but I have one in my office that my officemate uses. I have a hot plate and bring in a pan to cook everyday.
Ugggghhhhh……
This video includes a letter to the utility companies in the sidebar that can be copied/pasted/personalized forbidding smart meter installation. I don’t know if this helps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JNFr_j6kdI
Thanks for posting this! This is so important!
Thank you Sarah for posting this! After reading this I went to check where our meter was….sure enough it is a Smart Meter on the exact part of the wall where my son’s head is while he sleeps…..mere inches!!! My grandmother just died from brain cancer, so we already have a tendency towards it. My son has been lethargic for 6 months…i wonder if this could have anything to do with it! I am in CA and immediately called Edison to request removal and was told I will be put on the list for when that happens, so tomorrow we will be moving my kids beds into the dining room on the opposite side of the house. Thank you!!!
I am practically in tears reading this, Brady. I am so happy this post has helped your son. Please keep us posted on how he is doing and if he has better energy once he is sleeping further away from the smart meter.

If you go to http://www.centerforsaferwireless.org/Smart-Meters.php, you can access a template letter that you can send to your local utility or Public Service Commission.
If you live in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, the Center for Safer Wireless and Maryland Smart Meters Awareness are hosting a protest about smart meters at Pepco headquarters in Washington on February 29. The protest is being held in conjunction with similar protests in Naperville, IL and Canada. For more information about the protest, go to http://www.centerforsaferwireless.org/News-and-Events.php
I already have it and have had it for years. yuk
Last night, after telling my husband about this, he told me that a few weeks ago while I was out someone from the power company knocked on the door and said they needed to install a new meter. This upset me greatly and the very first thing I did this morning was call our electric company and DEMAND they remove it. He said they could NOT. I firmly told him this is our home and we are not going to be forced to have this device attached to our home when there is no reasearch proving it is safe and much research that indicates the opposite, etc., etc. He explained to me that the meter they recently removed was an RF meter, which had been on the house since it was built in 2006. The new meter is a TWACS meter, which is much safer and sends the information through hard wires rather than through the air. Does anyone know if he is correct in saying this meter is safer???? Sounds plausible.
YES he is. Although the other meter was no more dangerous to your health than a cell phone, bluetooth headset, wireless internet or any other wireless device.
I live in a Sparks, NV Apartment complex & don’t know if this will be the corporate owners’ decision or my decision as to whether or not NVEnergy installs/doesnt install the “Smart Meter”.
Alot that’s called Smart today, isn’t!
Just found our power company has been installing them since April 2010, but according to the map our area isn’t due until March. So I have a bit of time… I’m going to check this weekend if I already have it – hopefully not. I printed out the flyer in one of the first links in the comments and left it in our company’s break room. Hopefully it will help someone!!

Turns out I already had one!! Not sure how long… the website says they started in April 2010 or 2011 so maybe not that long… I simply emailed them about how to get the regular meter back and then a man showed up the very next day (lucky I was home) and replaced it. We’ll see if I get charged or not… I told my nanny about it. She was amazed that they installed one without my consent. Now it’s gone!!

Sarah,
Please don’t leave us with the bad news. What do we do if we have them? Do you know, is there anything we can do to protect our home and our family? What about those pendants you wear around your neck that are supposed to offer some protection? Do you have any knowledge if those are a hoax or not? Thanks.
We’ve had one for 6 years now! I had no idea they were bad until I read your blog. Thanks alot!
We opted out of the smart meter early on. Guess what, our utility company sent us a letter a week or so ago. They will charge us $75 to re-install our meter plus charge us $10 a month. If we get a smart meter…which of course will need to be installed, there is No Charge. I’m hoping a class action suit is in the works.
We were notified recently that they would be switching our meters as well. I just called and told them I wanted to opt out of doing that. They were totally fine with that, but there is a $10 charge per month, per meter…ouch! We have 3 meters…well worth the health of our family!!!! Thanks for posting this!

Great piece. Hoping these don’t start coming en vogue in Canada any time soon.
As a totally unrelated aside, whenever I see your mini logo among the tabs atop my window, I think it’s the Ghostbusters logo. Ya, that’s right, I’m refined like that.
The electric company decided to come into my yard which has a 6foot privacy fence with a gate and a sign that says beware of dog because I have 2 large dogs. I keep my dogs inside when I’m not home because it’s already hot here in Fl so I guess they jumped my fence. I am outraged!! I wonder if they will switch it back.
Why don’t you smart people do your homework. You have a RF device stuck to your ear? In your wireless internet. Wireless blue-tooth on your PC in you home, in your car, I bet even Harvard has wireless connections. All emit RF why are you bitching at the power companies. Wonder if it is because not they can cut your ass off when you don’t pay your bill. Or put you on pre pay so you have to pay for your electricity in advance, just like you do for fuel for your vehicle, or groceries, or smart phone data plans. Not all smart meters emit RF’s. Many are power line carriers. The signal comes over the power line. No more dangerous than Ethernet cables. Good grief get a grip people.
My sister in California had a Smart Meter installed without even knowing it. Now the power company says that while she could have opted out prior to the installation, there is no way to have it removed now.
Does anyone have any good links/resources I can share with her to help her get it off?
