I like Dr. Weil. I think he’s a nice guy and a thoughtful individual. He is obviously a very intelligent person with many respectable accomplishments throughout his storied career.
But, have I ever listened to him for nutritional advice?
No way, no how, not ever.
Here’s why.
Just like other conventional sources of health information, the deal is always changing. How can a person ever truly follow a healthy lifestyle if the dietary recommendations are in constant flux?
Case in point: Dr. Weil recently announced on his website that he is no longer recommending low-fat dairy products.
For those of you who are still buying skim milk and lowfat yogurt based on his adamant advice for many years thinking this was going to help shrink that backside and save you from heart disease, this may come as quite a shock.
21 Studies: Saturated Fat Does Not Cause Heart Disease
Dr. Weil’s reasoning as to why his “thinking on saturated fat has evolved” is based on a thorough analysis of 21 studies which showed that saturated fat is not associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
These 21 studies in total included nearly 350,000 people the majority of whom were healthy at the start of each study. These folks were followed for between 5 and 23 years and over this span of time, 11,000 developed heart disease or had a stroke.
Researchers examining the dietary intake for these thousands of participants found no difference in the risk of “coronary heart disease, stroke, or coronary vascular disease between those individuals with the lowest and highest intake of saturated fat.”
Here’s the kicker.
An apparently dumbfounded Dr. Weil writes that these findings go “completely against the conventional medical wisdom of the past 40 years. It now appears that many studies used to support the low-fat recommendation had serious flaws.”
Why Are You Still Listening To Conventional Health Advice?
My hat is off to Dr. Weil for coming to his senses, but the fact is that he should have recognized this crucial error long ago!
The clear cut data that saturated fat intake has absolutely zero to do with heart disease and other vascular ailments has been around for decades ever since Dr. Mary Enig, former Vice President of the Weston A. Price Foundation and currently Board Member Emeritus, blew the whistle on the scam ages ago and paid for her forthrightness and courage by having her research career blackballed.
What took you so long Andrew?? This is no minor “oops” on your part after all.
Dr. Weil’s 180 on saturated fat begs the obvious question.
What other nutritional errors are still being promoted by Dr. Weil and others like him from “respected and credible” outlets for health advice?
The answer is that there is a lot these TV talking heads promote that is way off the mark.
Having a medical or nutrition degree is no guarantee that the advice given is correct, not by a long shot.
How to Eat Healthy For the Long Term
Does Dr. Weil finally have it right about saturated fat?
Nope.
While his thinking on saturated fat has clearly “evolved” and he is now promoting full fat dairy, he is still off the reservation unfortunately.
For example, Dr. Weil still recommends skinless chicken and turkey and limiting saturated fat intake to 10% of daily calories in the diet. On what basis is he recommending no more than 10% of calories from saturated fat?
There is no basis for this recommendation! It is being pulled completely out of thin air! There is not a single shred of evidence that this recommendation is wise.
How do you know how much saturated fat you should be eating then?
How about looking to the past for your wisdom instead of an ever changing tide of conventional health opinion?
Dead people don’t seek profits or try to influence your buying habits, do they?
Dead people also don’t lie. You can simply examine what they did, see what the results were and objectively assess whether or not their methods were successful.
For these reasons, seeking the wisdom of Traditional Cultures who ate saturated fat with abandon and emphasized them in the diet is the simplest and best approach to health.
If you are tired of changing health advice and your head is spinning from the myriad approaches to eating that are promoted nowadays, I encourage you to take a look at the research of Dr. Weston A. Price, author of Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, a book that is virtually guaranteed to forever change the way you view health and wellness.
Dr. Price traveled the world in the early 1900′s and documented the vibrant health of 14 preindustrialized cultures. What these cultures emphasized for health is very different from what Dr. Weil promotes, sincere though he is in his quest to determine what diet bestows optimal health.
If the concept of Traditional Diets is new to you, click here for a short video introduction.
Isn’t it high time to stop changing the way you eat every few months or years and follow the anthropological path to diet and health that has already been trodden by cultures who fully experienced the vitality you seek?

This is so funny because he was on Dr. Oz awhile ago and I remember thinking he had the right idea about some stuff but not everything. I wish you or someone from the WAPF would end up on Dr. Oz one day!! I cant say The Doctors show because they would never go away from being mainstream!
Read Dr. Price’s Nutrition & Physical Degeneration online for free here: http://goo.gl/Jz3s6
Wow, thank you for the book link! Now I can show send people the direct link instead of the summaries.
Great article, Sarah. I agree wholeheartedly and am wondering when the time will come when conventional nutrition finally catches up to us!
Brandon\’s last post: 75 Uses for Baking Soda
Conventional health advice will never “catch up” with us who are in the know about Traditional Diets as the motivations are money, profits and influencing consumer buying habits, not health. Our motivations are simply health and vitality, nothing more.
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist\’s last post: Dr. Weil Changes His Deal
Also, Dr. Oz used to be totally against saturated fat. Now, he has changed his mind, recommending coconut oil. They are always changing their minds, and it makes them look as though they don’t really know what they’re talking about. Of course, they received a very archaic education on nutrition, I still would not want to get nutrition advice from them.
Brandon\’s last post: 75 Uses for Baking Soda
I see this as a good thing. Sure they may have a ways to go, but at least they are humble enough to publicly reverse their stand after considering the evidence. Good on them! (Which of us is “right” from the very start and never make mistakes anyway?) I see this as a plus for all of us on the same side.
It is still dangerous to listen to anything these so called experts promote because if they were truly on the ball, they would have recognized that saturated fats were healthy ages ago. This is not new info – they just chose to ignore it as it was good for their careers. It is only when the gun is pointed at their heads and the idiocy of what they are spouting becomes more widely recognized by the mainstream public that they finally admit their error.

Yes…it can be dangerous to put any faith in the ever changing nutritional advice from conventional sources. However, I’m with Cee. Let’s be grateful for their conversion, however slow these initial baby steps are. Praise every step, and keep on teaching, teaching, teaching!
Cee, NancyO
That’s a pretty generous attitude considering the amount of human suffering that has and is still occurring behind these long-held erroneous ideas. But, since we can protect our families by taking heed of the spirit of this post and be grateful that some measure of accurrate information eventually comes to light as neither is mutually exclusive.
There’s a middle ground here.
We can be happy they got it and support that, but still say that we’re not going to look to them for advice. Each of these doctors is only a single human and no single human should be relied upon as “the” source of information. Particularly not one who might be influenced by money and sponsors.
So, yay for Dr. Weil for catching on and now making a healthier recommendation. But this does not mean he is overall trustworthy. All recommendations should still be individually evaluated.
Glad you agree, I also hope we are also as generous with others that are following conventional thought and are then dealing with obesity and all manners of ill-health and ill-behaior.
The difference is that people like Weil make a fortune selling their snake-oil advice and average people like you and me do not. Case in point: how many people have medical centers named after them? (Weil Cornell Medical Center) I bet he changed his mind for monetary gains.
I believe Weill Cornell Medical College is named after Sanford I. Weill, a Cornell alumni and philanthropist who donated millions of dollars to the medical college.
Look in his books and on his website…he says that if you do not drink flouridated water you should get a prescription from your dentist for flouride pills!!!! Espsecially for your kids!! I think he should stick to selling pots, pans, and shoes.
How scary is that? You gotta wonder WHY they are giving this advice because these people certainly aren’t stupid. I have dark thoughts on this……
And what took you so long Sarah to post this?
I saw this months ago on his website and passed it along to our WAPF chapter leader with a few giggles to go with it. Not laughing at you Dr. Weil, just with you! We’ve all been suckered in over the years with the latest “this,” the latest “that” and that is how I ended up at WAPF. I just got so tired of the latest “finding,” and “diet,” and wanted to just go back to eating real food. Thanks for posting this at last! XXOO!
Ha, ha. Good point. It’s not like I hang on what he says or follow the TV shows he appears on! He just put this on his website earlier this month … a reader sent it to me!! Thank you Jane

I saw it on his website in 2011, probably in the fall.
Dr. Weil and other well intentioned players in the industry can no longer ignore the evidence in front of their faces. Convention will come around to this reality when the players, in the industry, with an agenda can no longer hide or distort the evidence.
Great article! I hope Dr. Weil reads this!
Lions and tigers and bears, OH MY! Could a MOM actually have something to say to a high and mighty MD making millions from an enamored public hanging on his every word?
I say YES. Mothers – listen to that Mother’s intuition when it comes to feeding your children. I have ignored this instinct to my dismay on a few occasions and no longer EVER ignore it.

I am grateful and excited that the sails have been trimmed, just a little more, towards the healthier direction. And that Dr. Weil was wiling to admit it to his readers.
I have known many people who have looked to Dr. Oz, Dr. Weil and others only to be so confused by their flip-flopping theories. I agree that at least Dr. Weil is realizing the mistake of low fat dairy and that’s a start. Good article.
Ding dong doctors.
“My hat is off to Dr. Weil for coming to his senses, but the fact is that he should have recognized this crucial error long ago!”- Mine too, Sarah!
finally!
Great article! Glad you wrote this, hopefully people will start taking their health into their own hands instead of listening to the “experts”. As you say, this is not new information.
Agi\’s last post: Your Own Dog Food
The problem is that mainstream folks will overlook the flip flopping because Oz and Weil use the words “new research” and their audience will buy it hook line and sinker. WAPF and Mercola have been aware of this for decades.
Dr Weill loves his soy and tofu. For that alone I pay very little attention to what he says. There are some aspects of what he does I like but for the most part the soy makes me look the other way. I believe he is pro vacs also which makes me question him. He is on the right path and means well but still to commercial and swayed by conventional med.
Jennifer…I don’t like the soy or the way he promotes vaccinations either. I also don’t like when he brings on a “expert” on skin care or some other category and all they do is promote a certain brand. It’s like watching an infomercial. He made me want to throw my shoe at the TV when he advised getting the flu shot and on one show, he actually got one from a pharmacist at Walgreens. Big promo for Walgreens!!
I tolerate watching him for the reasons I listed below, because some of it is worthwhile. I just take a bathroom break or snack break when the bullshit comes..LOL

ooops Jennifer, in my reply to you I was talking about Dr. Oz. I just realized you were talking about Dr. Weil. Sorry about that.
Roseann @ The Wholesome Life\’s last post: The Wholesome Life updated Fri Mar 23 2012 2:08 pm EDT
I too was turned off by the heavy use of soy and tofu by Weil. He also doesn’t eat red meat, I believe, and very little animal flesh at all; maybe some fish once in a while. As for the vacs, yes he is pro. My NP said probably because he needs to stay main stream or he won’t get on shows like Larry King and Dr. Oz! But if he’s come around on sat fat….there’s hope for him yet!
The research in his post that you reference is worth reading, even though I knew it already. It’s great to hear someone mainstream say, “One found that consumption of low-fat dairy foods contributed to infertility caused by failure to ovulate, while consumption of full-fat dairy foods may help the problem. ” I’m blaming full-fat dairy on why I keep getting surprise babies! lol
I watch Dr. Oz because although he’s mainstream, he does do alternative cures and treatments for many ailments, plus warning signs of many serious ailments. Anyway, I actually heard him advise that when eating steak or burgers, make sure they’re grass fed. I almost fell off the sofa…LOL I still don’t like that he advocates eating soy, but who knows, miracles do happen. He may change his mind about the soy as well one of these days.

Thanks for the great post. 10 years ago I found saturated fats and have only grown healthier – and skinnier.

I’m with you Victoria. I look better in a bathing suit now in my late 40′s after 3 kids than I did in my 20′s before I had any kids. No TV talking head “expert” is getting me off Traditional Diet!!! Bring on the butter!
Right on Victoria! It makes me giggle when I hear that fat is supposed to make me fat. I eat 300 calories a day just from coconut oil alone, not to mention all the butter I slather on everything, and I’m 5’3″ and 112 lbs. I’m 28 and haven’t noticed any of the spread that starts happening when you get closer to 30 yet.
Yeah, want to get rid of the cellulite? EAT BUTTER. I had cellulite at age 19 and was as thin as a rail. I don’t have any now. No pills, potions or special massages. Just BUTTER.
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist\’s last post: Dr. Weil Changes His Deal
Excited to buy that book by Weston Price:) Heard lots of good stuff about!
Read it online for free here: http://goo.gl/Jz3s6
Its great to hear that another mainstream source is coming to the light about saturated fats and overall nutritional advice.
I haven’t followed Dr. Weil lately and I’m sure he has done the about face if you say so, but I do have to say he was an important teacher for me at the start of my TF journey. Credit where credit is due – I gave up margarine for butter, started eating more whole foods such as broccoli and wild seafood and first looked into filtered water based on the advice in one of his early books – 8 Weeks to Optimum Health, I think.
Preach!
Thank you so much for sharing this!! I must post this.
I do not know what motivates you to do so much for others, but I’m grateful for it.
I’m sure Dr. Weil has a pill to sell that will help us understand his about face. He’s got a pill for everything! pfft
Great article. Thanks for pointing out once again that “conventional” does NOT mean “accurate”.
My husband and I began eating saturated fats about 1.5 years ago and have both lost nearly 20 pounds. Friends just don’t believe us when we tell them. And I still get ridiculed for eating butter! But I believe ten years from now this will be mainstream.
Yeah! Way to put it! You can’t really trust those “celebrity _________s” in my opinion. For example, I studied under a chef in college and he said those celebrity chefs on Food Network are not “ALL THAT AND A BAG OF CHIPS” like so many people think. I think they are just people giving their opinions, usually backed by someone who wants their opinion to sell a product. So there you have it!
It is amazing you should post this today when I just got back from having my blood lipid profile done at my doctor’s office.
I am an (extremely) obese woman in my late 40′s with histories of heart disease on both sides of my family. I am regularly checked for signs of high cholesterol and other heart issues, but none ever surface. Our family had been using the good oils and had switched back to butter years ago, and my doctor told me then that my profiles were better than hers! Today, I was curious what the numbers would be after switching to ghee for most of our frying and whole milk and cream for our milk needs (as opposed to low-fat grocery store fare). My numbers were even BETTER. I was elated! Thanks for helping me have the courage to take the raw milk plunge.
Great article Sarah, and great answers to the comments. The powers that be will not change because it does not serve their monetary interests, the hoi-polli will not change because they simply buy into the “expert” propaganda, no questions asked. Even though our ranks are growing we remain the few. People will not change until their lives breakdown, and then it is usually too late. Keep up your wonderful work so that those who have the gift of discernment may continue to benefit.
Well said!
It is a start for the mainstream people to improve their health and start to learn to look for the answers. Many will eventually get interested in WAPF somehow, because it is not yet a household name when everyone is still looking for the latest diet.
20 years ago, I didn’t know anything at all about healthy eating and still I am learning about the RIGHT way to eat. It is a process for many people! Stopped smoking, eating twinkies, processed frozen/canned food, margarine, over the course of many years. I sincerely hope Dr.s Weil & Oz learn more and give better advice out there, because they already have a following. I appreciate what we can learn here. We need a show for this but it would be difficult to get sponsors!
About face….hmmm….follow the money.
Funny how the names Oz and Weil are repeated a lot here, yet the name Mercola hasn’t popped into the conversation yet.
Well said Sarah. I have been following Dr. Weil for many years and sadly his recommendations have always changed with the wind. This is not the first time, nor will it be the last. He is not the only one. Whenever we see these 180′s, always remember to follow the dollar. This is where the rubber meets the road.
cindy\’s last post: The Saga of Mammography
This whole Conventional Paradigm versus My Paradigm is a false choice. No one understands this stuff completely, not even The Enlightened Paleo Practitioner. And if nutritionists, scientists, and above all the media are to change their views and stop praising egg white omelettes anytime soon, the last thing they need are a bunch of self-righteous “what took you so longs.”
I have to take a bit of exception with the idea of you telling people not to follow the conventional “expert” and then turning around and encouraging them to follow another “expert”. As Tony mentioned, none of us know exactly the perfect way to eat. We do the best we can with the information we have. Personally I tend follow the eat-local, non-processed, everything in moderation plan. I think we get ourselves in trouble when we say “none of this, but as much of that as you want.”. Balance is always key.
The expert I’m recommending folks take a look at is dead. He can’t change his recommendations based on which way the wind is blowing. Big difference. Dr. Price also based his info on scientific analysis of people who had been vibrantly healthy for centuries. Examine what he has to say and make a simple, objective choice. Easy
Dr. Weil and other TV health goons base their recommendations on what their TV sponsors want them to emphasize. You follow what they say and you are going to be doing a lot of things wrong which you will find out too late to save your health. There is no balance when it comes to misguided health advice. You must avoid it ALL and go with what has been shown to work for centuries even before the scientific method was devised.
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist\’s last post: Dr. Weil Changes His Deal
Great article again! Dr. Weil definitely helped me as kind of a gateway to nutrition and alternative health, and I dare say that his recommendations (particularly on magnesium) saved me life. But his advocacy of soy really threw me for a loop — I started drinking that as a solution to asthma and it really made it worse, making me feel really run-down. Seems like Dr. Weil has to “make nice” with the conventional med guys as he’s an integrative medical exponent. The guy I really respect now is Tony Pantalleresco (“just a guy who knows some stuff”) with “The Remedy” program on The Micro Effect. He’s been a bodybuilder and in the health food field for a number of decades and never pulls any punches. But I’m still trying to find a good Omega oil source as he says the fish oils are all contaminated with mercury. Guess I’ll keep trying different alternatives until I find the one that’s right for me. Thanks again for posting this and keep up the helpful information!
I am a conventionally trained physician. What most people (including physicians!) don’t understand is that 99% of medical education is about treating disease using drugs or surgery. I didn’t have in depth classes about nutrition, traditional use of herbs for health maintenance, or any of the vast literature about health and healing. Conventionally trained doctors truly know very little to nothing about these things, unless they (like me) are interested and go further in researching such things.
It really takes a leap out of one’s trained mindset to grasp the importance of epigentetics: how the environment we present to our genes affects the expression of those genes. The other problem is that 90% of my patients expect to walk out of my office with a prescription. I’m a psychiatrist. If I talk to my patients about eating small fish and wild salmon instead of adding yet another medication to their antidepressant, they look at me funny. (“Ask your doctor if Ability is right for you.”)
I have come so far in my thinking that I would love to change my practice to a “mental health without drugs” one in which I coach people to wellness using nutrient dense food, meditation, and gentle exercise.
In my dreams.
Susie
We need more MDs like you Susie. Thank you for your thoughtful response.
Susie,
People, maybe not your patients however, will listen to you. You have the credentials. You have the ability to influence. They’re not going to listen to someone like me whose hobby is studying nutrition. You have the respect, you have the knowledge, and with this comes the duty of never stopping the spreading of this information. If every doctor was like you the pharmaceutical companies and vaccine manufacturers would have to bypass the doctors’ prescription pads. The masses would then, hopefully, see the pharmaceutical industry for the charlatans they are.
No DI-ETS! (You’ll eventually die from di-ets!) Just LIVE-ITS!!! Forget the stupid modern food fads. Eat your food the way God made it in the first place – cooked, raw, lacto-fermented, etc…, & you’ll be just fine
When people ate food naturally, they died of germ diseases. Those have practically been wiped out. But now the world eats like crap (fake food) – and we’re all dying of degenerative diseases. EAT REAL FOOD.
Hey Mnt. Joe, this ones for you
Isn’t it loads better that he realizes a truth now than never? Your kudos to Dr. Weil, unfortunately, is buried under tons of criticism. We all can’t have all of your dietary wisdom of all things Weston Price all at once, nor is it normal for anyone to wholeheartedly agree with it in its entirety right off the bat. It may take more time for some. Sheesh, give him a bit of grace!
No grace from me. How many people has Dr. Weil made sick or killed by his refusal to admit his error years sooner? There is no doubt in my mind that he knew about the saturated fat causes heart disease error – he just chose to ignore it. He was more worried about his career than the truth until it was staring him in the face from a public many of whom “got it” before he did.
Sarah, TheHealthyHomeEconomist\’s last post: Fitness Is A Family Affair – Part 2
I completely agree with you there, Sarah. Dr. W. is not a nobody, not just another GP. He has a very large audience, written several books and has claimed to be in possession of the truth. People who do this must accept the responsibilities that come with such action.
Dr. Weil is a very carefully marketed individual .. the beard, the guru type of persona. It’s all very careful packaging to gain the trust and acceptance of TV viewers and those who buy his books.
Very very dangerous to listen to these types of folks when it comes to health advice.
This post is the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. Dr. Weil admitted that he was mistaken about saturated fat and you criticize him for not having discovered this sooner?? I view what he did as a step in the right direction.
I have appreciated the helpful information that you’ve put out there, Sarah, but there are plenty more sources about traditional diets in the blogosphere that don’t come across as judgmental as yours, thus making the real food way of life more accessible and not as intimidating to newbies. Even Sally Fallon Morell has said, “Don’t make food your religion.”
I greatly worry about the myths that get regurgitated all the time within the media and from people who should know better. I wonder how long it’s going to be for mainstream to catch up with the truth. I agree with other posters, at least he’s used his own mind to do this u-turn.

Sarah, your blog is my favorite because you don’t sugar coat things or seem to worry about offending people. Your writing is spot on and terse! That is refreshing. THANK YOU for your amazing hard work in keeping us educated!
@Claudia Just calling a spade a spade. Dr. Weil knew about his error long ago no doubt about it. How many people has he killed by refusing to admit his mistake earlier? I don’t go easy on people who are making other people sick by being more interested in their careers than the truth.
@Cassandra thank you
I just call it as I see it. Folks are free to disagree and that is of course fine. If folks agreed with everything I wrote, my blog would be worthless.
Sarah, thanks for your blog post. I have a serious question I hope you can answer. I’ve tried asking Sally Fallon but she seems to be stupified that anyone could have this reaction.
I’ve heard so many times that saturated fat has no connection heart disease of any kind. So how is it that every time I try to increase my saturated fat intake, I get heart palpitations, and also — even more uncomfortable for me — severe restless leg syndrome related to poor circulation? Both of these ‘symptoms’ happen, without fail, every single time I try to eat a little butter, or keep some of the chicken skin on the chicken, etc.
I look forward to your reply.
Thanks in advance,
Kelly
Keep eating that butter and see what happens in your 30′s!!! What are you people talking about! Dr. Weil is far from conventional. Things are going to continue to change based on new medical research. Too much of anything is bad for you. What people have died!!! It’s called having a balanced diet and making the best decisions with the information presented to us. If anything, the man is a pioneer, helping the masses to get away from processed crap. Stating that the man has killed people is just ignorant and you should be ashamed of yourself. But again, what should I expect from someone who is not educated in the field. FYI: Dr Price was a dentist! This could be the most worthless website on the intranet.
You want research?
CHINA STUDY, completed by experts in the field. Not a dentist. LOL
Good luck
Ominvore Diet–One day will do a segment on this—all these guys weil- OZ all HS at best—would not believe anything they say they are like feathers in the wind and will go to and fro as long as you follow them and support there BS—I do not advocate listening to any mainstream doctor selling hype—this is a well structured game to get people to waste money on products that are either inert or will not have any effect due to lack of understanding and following bad advice cause people to fore go any sound options that might be effective—and alot of these people selling is what they are doing not actually illustrating the value and use and what should be combo’d and what should be avoided in the use of an alternative
Tony
For example? What are you talking about. At least give some facts!
I read comments in order to gain information. I found your comments totally unhelpful. In fact my impression was that providing information was not your objective. Rather your intention, and you succeeded was to criticize Weil for the sake of putting him down. We all attempt follow scientific advances which inform us and shape our opinions. I trust Weil and have found every reason to continue to do so.
I have read every comment and found them very interesting. The bottom Line as I see it is the simple statement my mother, who lived in good health to age 96 years, 7 months said: “Eat a little bit of Everything, and not MUCH of anything.” , which I have tried to follow. I am age 88+ and take no pills or prescriptions except thyroid replacement as a result of “pre-cancerous nodules” that prompted surgery in my late 40′s. The other wise statement she made at the end of every phone conversation we had was: Now, Betty, Get your Sleep. Except for Macular Degeneration I would still be playing tennis. I do swim nearly every day,….laps. I grew up on raw, whole milk. I have 6 adult, healthy children.
